Models with tribute names?

Post by Gerardo »

I've seen models which names are a tribute to other people like friends and fellow origamists for example. Do you know any? Which?

Thanks in advance guys!

Perhaps the most famous one is "Shining Alice" by Michael Shall, dedicated to Alice Gray.

Jerry Harris was kind enough to name his piece "Marc's Crocodile" for the 1992 OrigamiUSA Collection

I have seen a few pieces named after pets.

That's all that comes to mind so far...Marc

Thanks guys! Those are great examples.

Does anyone know about popular models created by Latin Americans or Spaniards with tribute names?

Marc, could you please show me or tell me about those examples named after pets?

Golden retriever Alex by Chad Kileen, designed to tribute the death of the pet:

The following examples were made by Joseph Wu, made as gifts for his friends who own these dogs.

These two do not have a tribute name, but were made to represent two concrete golden retrievers:

This one is more recent:

This is Evie by Jason Ku:

Thanks Pete. Do you know if Chad Killeen teaches how to fold Alex somewhere (diagram, CP, instructional video...)?

As I understand many of the butterflies in LaFosse's book Origami Butterfly have names in honor of fellow origamists. Is that correct? Do all the insect models in the book have tribute names?

I'll have to check on his flickr page.

apparently, it comes from an equilateral triangle, at least this one does:

I guess it was inspired by the same dog...

There is also an alternative (older) CP:

with this as the result:

I honestly don't know which of the CPs folds into the model I have shown you, but probably neither, as it was folded from a square and looks different than the old design he made. He probably kept the instructions secret because it was a tribute piece...

Chad is an amazing designer, although not at all active online any more, sadly... Here is his flickr page:

You are welcome, I must say that Chad's tribute piece made me cry the first time I saw it, it was shortly after I have lost a dog of my own, I don't think any other origami piece made me cry ever.

Here is another piece by Joseph Wu, a havanese dog called Carter:

He also made this tribute piece:

Artur Biernacki took inspiration from the model:

and so did Sergio Alejandro:

I think the following one should have been mentioned earlier though:

Tribute to Eric Joisel by Nguyen Hung Cuong:

Mr. Joisel also made this wonderful mask of Nick Robinson:

Joseph Wu also created a tribute to Eric Joisel:

I can't believe you've found so many! If you also find some by Spanish-speaking origamists I would really appreciate it :).
