Left of the spiral line, the steps 58 and 59 show the inside view, like an x-ray of the model. It is what you see if you lift the front layer where the star is shown in step 57.
By the way, reading the text helps a lot!

The stars and squares on page 7 are markers. They mark what point goes where in the next step. There are four different markers to mark four different flaps.
For example on page 20 in step 18 he rotates the model. To check whether you rotated it the same way you can check the position of the stars in step 19. This kind of marking is especially useful if the points change their appearance drastically during a step and are hard to recognize afterwards. An example for this is on page 185, where the point in step 70 gets opened up and 3D in step 71, looking even less recognizable in step 72.
An example where you can see three markers in use is the sequence on page 208, steps 179 to 182.

It's explained in step 45...
Either you "open the layers and sink" (lower path) or you "just push in the layers" (right path).
The choice is yours, but the lower path is probably more difficult.

If i remember right, either way, the portion that you are working with ends up inside the model. Looking at the finished model, I don't believe you would be able to tell the difference one way or the other.
