That is an important point when buying any used book, sight unseen. I do the following, along with the ISBN verification, if possible:
1. Try to find info about the particular book online, or from review sites.
2. Try to get a list of the Table of Contents, or Index for older books.
3. I use something unique about the book, for example Origami-4 has a blue cover, 186 pages, Baby Grand on p. 83, Buddah - 101, Siesta-134. in my copy. No other book has that unique combination.
4. Then I send a query to the seller, asking about that info.
5. Before I understood this process, it took me 4 months to locate Origami-4.
6. Using this process, I located Origami-2 under a different name and Origami-3, listed only as Origami, The Art of Paper Folding in 2 days.
7. Having said all of that, Japanese books can be a bit harder to track down
