As is, Kamiya's Phoenix CP is not flat-foldable. It does not meet the conditions of Maekawa's or Kawasaki's theorems of flat-foldability. Maekawa's theorem says that at any interior crease intersection M-V=±2, so there must be an even number of creases intersecting. There are various locations in the CP with only 3 or 5 creases intersecting, so it's not flat-foldable.

I added the blue lines to fix that. They're all just hinge creases I believe. And it turns out I missed the ones on the head.

Well, in order to make the folds that intersect at the top left of the circle, there will have to at least be a soft crease in the circle, and for flat-foldability there would be a hard crease. In Kamiya's CP he shows a crease there. You can actually see it in the photo if you look carefully. The body is folded back in half along that crease.

Hi everyone, I'm wondering if there are any other diagrams such as the one posted by "origamimasterjared" detailing steps on how to achieve the folds in the CP?

I have never worked with just a CP before so I'm feeling pretty lost as to which folds will be mountain vs. valley folds, squashes, inside reverse folds etc...how can you tell?

Any help would be great!

Well, that's the trick about CP's. The fun in figuring it out for yourself but it takes a bit of experience to figure out something as complex as this phoenix. I suggest you perform a search to find some threads on CP help, because you should definetely find something easier to fold before tackling this one.

hey, im sorta new to origami and i would like to work my way up to a project like this one. i have done basic origami but that was a few years ago and i reacently just started back up again. Thanks in advance for any help.

Your post is fine.

There are some of us who have been folding for years, but this is too complex. And, there are others who have only folded for a couple of years, that this kind of folding is fun.

There are lots of previous posts to help you. What types of things have you folded in the past .... so we can point you at stuff.

You might start by using the search to seek out folding CPs
