my dragon design
hi everyone, so i have a question about the dragon i'm in the process of designing, i will ask it later once i've explained why i am going to ask the question.
i've been working on the design since i was 7 making changes to it as my skill in origami developed, it went from a t-rex looking creature with wings to a more dragon looking thing, to a dragon with claws on the back feet, to a dragon with claws on all feet and a mouth, and now, with my latest break through in the design i've almost doubled the length of the neck and tail
cp right here http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk233/zxop9/dcp.jpg
as i folded the cp with my latest changes it was looking amazing, although i didn't put the pleats in that form the claws (and would make a better head) http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk23 ... dbase1.jpg
i was impressed with this and it was time to rearange the flaps so it looked more like a dragon, when i wa done this i was shocked, the result here http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk23 ... dbase2.jpg it looks almost identical to the base of kamiyas ancient dragon!
my question is, knowing it is almost the same as kamiyas dragon, should i even keep designing it, or should i pull back and look at it from a different angle? this was very dissapointing for me and ANY feed back would be great!

One plane-engineer from the USA commented ideas about engineer-spy of Soviet engineers during constructing Concorde like this:
If you say to computer compute a supersonic plane for 100 people, Soviet computer will compute the same design of body and wings as French computer.
With your design is the same. Be happy that you "discover" the same base as Kamiya, it means you are good designer.

i actually have an objection...
it's completely okay to "redesign" a model from an already existing base - it's your achievement and you can put your own style into it (if you like to) but it's also one of the most significant attributes to origami that one can design everything (at least in theory as the paper gives the limit
) and so there will always be entirely new models coming up. i suppose you all know the feeling you get looking at really innovative and unusual models, the excitement that comes with the surprise and so on...
why then design dragons from the same base again and again? - because this circle-packing is the most effective and favorable one and unfortunately there are hardly any alternatives (unless you don't give a **** about efficiency...
)
so i'd suggest you to add something special to your dragon. an idea of something unique that makes "some" dragon to your very own dragon AND challenges you to create an actually new circle packing (plus cp): a different number/proportion/location of flaps/patterns etc. (you don't have to turn an existing base inefficient to make your dragon differ from others, you simply have to discover new structures with other features)
i don't mean to criticize you or your work, it's just my view... simply do as you like

You might want to change it a little. It's way too similar to Kamiya's dragon. Maybe add spines or teeth, different head, belly pleats etc. Maybe one pair of the legs could come form the middle and the other could come from the side. Try to individualize yourself from other artists. Don't keep using the same bases, especially those already designed by others.
I've fallen down, and I can't get up.

like i say, twas an accident it was so similar to kamiyas.
i already have a base for a dragon with teeth (and claws and wings of corse) it comes from generaly the same base my t-rex with teeth does, but still needs a lot of work before i will show it. (this is just a crappy scan of a first attempt at the t-rex out of really bad tissue foil http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk23 ... icture.jpg)
i think i will ajust the circle packing in the base and try to make an effective three headed dragon though(but still stick to same idea of the bird base but with 2 extra flaps for wings) btw i was not looking at the base as a bird base at all in the begining it just turned out that way.

ok i've put together a cp (needs a lot of work though) it is basic and gives the right flaps (still need to do a lot of grafting)
anyway first time folding the base from lined paper http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk23 ... ase1-1.jpg
and the cp http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk23 ... basecp.jpg
what do you all think?
