I discovered Google Sketchup (http://sketchup.google.com/)
It's a free 3D modelling software and while playing with it for the first time, I realised that it was really good for drawing flat (2D) schematic-type diagrams. you can draw a perfect square (always a good start), divide the edges into any number you like and create new lines from the division points. the only thing i haven't figured out is how to bisect angles, if anyone tries it and figures it out, please let me know
I drew Eric Joisel's Dwarf CP in about 5-10 mins, i'm not too sure about the legality (or morality) of posting a pic of it so i'll leave it
