### Level shifters

Posted: November 14th, 2012, 4:49 am
Level shifters had been covered in the second edition of origami design secrets which allows us to specifically and selectively widen certain parts of the orgami models giving it its proportional shape for example beetles. I am also really interested in adding it into my crease pattern but i do not really have sufficient knowledge on how to go about folding it and how i should implement it into the crease pattern. Can someone help me? Thank you

I know a bit about level shifters but I find it hard to explain. I haven't used them much though in my models because my designs haven't needed them. I quickly drew a simple example...

Take the first picture as part of the CP. In the second picture we have added the level shifters. In the third picture we are now able to take away some of the lines because of the level shifter. This makes the top part of the CP wider. This is just a simple example. You can add 2 more level shifters to the Cp as shown in the next picture...

You can arrange the level shifters in different many different position to get different results. I hope this helped in some way

That is really true!! That helps ! thank you and also how about the square ones? It was kind of obvious that it had added layers but i do not understand how many should we put and etc.Why would someone put 2 of them on each side? Thank you for the reply !!

The square ones or diamond ones depending on what you call it are done like so...

The first picture is a bunch of vertical pleats. In the second picture we ad a horizontal pleat plus 2 of the level shifters. In the third picture we can now unsink part of the model to make that section wider.
You can also chose to add just one level shifter as shown in the next picture...

I hope this helps. Just like the other level shifter I showed before you can arrange these in many different positions to get different results

To try out your new gained knowledge on a real example, you can now go along and fold Langko's awesome lizard, that actually makes use of the square ones:

Thanks a lot Langko.

Well it depends entirely on the situation...

If the level shifter is in the middle of a pleat like in the first picture then yes. If the level shifter isn't in the middle of a pleat like the second picture then no. Hope that makes sense

Your welcome and thank you! I am glad you like my lizard

Alright!! i think i will be asking a final question... in your crease pattern for the lobster in http://www.flickr.com/photos/langko/750 ... otostream/

i realised that the level shifters intersected each other. How is it possible? Just really curious XD hhahaha

From looking at it, those are just formed by sinking the corners formed by the level shifters. If you ignore the upper square on each pleat, you're left with the standard level-shifting molecule. Then just sink the corner along the creases created by the square.

This thread looks really helpful! I have been trying to figure out level shifters more (I read ODS but I still don't understand how to do level shifters (the 90 degree angle version)).
But none of the pictures on this thread are working anymore! Langko, if you still have those pictures saved somewhere, could you upload them again, please?

Thank you!
