Origamists aren't weird!

Post by ~folder~of~paper~ »

Does anyone here get knocked and slagged off just for being into origami?
I carry a large box of kami and washi aroung everywhere and I mean EVERYWHERE! These girls came up to me the other day and started swearing at me for no reason, calling me every word under the sun, just cause of my box!
I admit, I am a little weird... but I just want to know, do I live in an unaccepting area or does it happen to you guys too? :?

Well, I don't think most of the people on this forum carry around a box of "folding paper." I must say that that is a little out of the ordinary :) But hey! it basically the same thing as a pad of leagal paper so....

I personally have never been insulted because of my folding. most people think it is "amazing" but that is after I have folded something.
I think some people are just mean, and others don't care.
So the answer is no.

No, not really. Actually, like the above one said people are amazed after your done folding but this one annoying classmate of mine keeps calling origami as "weird" or "crazy" or "your weird because you do origami". I really want to punch him in the face but ,no , I cant

Weird is a coarse word, I prefer the term oddities. People have a very sound idea of who I am, and I do not take crud from anyone; it's obvious that these people do not know what an origami rose can do to women.

There are always small-minded people who make fun of what they don't understand. You can let them make you unhappy, or you can realize that they're just stupid. And there's really no point in arguing with stupid people...you'll just make your head ache.

Well said Joseph.

About the briefcase:
I think it actually might be opisite of what you want. It might be "wierd" to some when you take out a little box filled with paper. But if you take out a sleek briefcase, open it up, and take out a....piece of colored paper....they might think you are really wierd... :)
I would say just ignore them and find some people who appreciate your folding skills.

Isn´t it some kind of a compliment to be called weird from these weird non folding people?
I also carry a pack of paper around with me everywhere I go, I think that´s usual for Origamists. Until now I haven´t encountered any worse attacks than people calling me completely crazy, but that´s something I can live with very easy (what a nice compliment!!! :D ).

Uh, for a group whose common interests include sci-fi, dragons, insects, etc. you think you can can get out of "weird"...haha...no way.

Naw, no doubt, we are weird. But it's not weird in a bad way. It's weird in an interesting, quirky way. And, I can't speak for the rest of the world, but here in Southern California, at least with college kids and younger, it seems that "weird" is not a bad thing at all (unless you're talking about how someone looks). People are now proud of their kinks, (whether true or not) Haven't you seen all the stereotypical popular girls calling themselves nerds, dorks and weird?

And the only person who's really not been positive about my origami has been my dad (and after about thirteen years he's finally approving). Everyone else loves the stuff. Especially at college. I was asked to make so many things I both lost track and didn't have time.

Me, I don't actually carry paper with me most of the time. I can usually find some to use though. Too many receipts have found themselves reincarnated... Sometimes, when I wear a jacket, I carry around a little pack of 3 inch foil in a pocket.

Aren't you a little young to be carrying around a briefcase?...That would look mighty strange...

@origamimasterjared: My dad also says that origami is just a "waste of paper" and that "we wate trees". News flash: I USE ONION SKIN PAPER! beat that :P

To rokonacdc: I like your briefcase. It looks cool 8)

To joe: I definitely agree. My head always aches(and sometimes gets a nerve tweak-it hurts) when I agrue with stupid people. I always rip paper when I get angry

So why bother getting angry? You can't change people who aren't open to change. You can only change yourself. If you get angry, you only hurt yourself. The stupid person won't be bothered, so the anger is totally not worth it.

Humm the briefcase would be a built in folding table too... it has possibilities!

Sadly I have never been insulted for my origami, I look forward to the day when someone randomly decides to do so in the street or train as it has the potential to keep me amused for at least 10 minutes.
