Origami FAQ

Post by wolf »

Out of curiosity, I did a google search for an origami faq and failed to find a single recent, general and comprehensive one.

The closest ones I've found were Zack Brown's FYI and David Mitchell's FAQ, at:

http://lynx.dac.neu.edu/z/zbrown/origami/
(lots of old, dead links and ancient info)

http://www.mizushobai.freeserve.co.uk/faq.htm

The one at origami.kvi.nl appears to date back to the last millenium.
:shock

Some questions:
1. Is there a need/demand for such an FAQ?

2. What should be included in an FAQ?

3. Any volunteers? :D

To answer my own questions:
1) I think there is, judging by the frequency of questions like "where can I find X?" on various lists, forums and newsgroups. Somehow the word on the Origami Model Database isn't quite getting out yet.

2) Since there are already so many good articles on origami (eg techniques), it's more practical to compile a list of websites than to rewrite all this information. There are some aspects which I haven't really seen yet though, like a good discussion of the various types of paper out there (not just the standard kami/foil/elephant hide, but other things like scrapbooking paper and metal foils). An FAQ could fill out these information blanks.

3) One word: Thesis. :P It'll be an interesting free time project though.

Any thoughts or comments?

I think there are not that many "frequently asked questions" that there is need for an extra webpage about this. think about the FAQ, and you will find out by yourself, that they are only few of them.
FAQ I found so far

1. Paper
Where to find?... depends too much on the county you're living. I don't think that a korean folder is interested in any german origami stores!
How to make?... hmm, what paper else could you self-produce but foiled one???
What to use?... you asked about non standard paper, but is any american folder interested in special paper from belgium that he probably would never get???

2. techniques
it's good to know about origami techniques but is best be tought from folder to folder, not from webpage to folder. and besides: are there so many different techniques? I only know normal and wetfolding... maybe modular...

3. books
origami database or any other good origami page.

there is really no need for an origami FAQ page. only my opinion :)

greetings

What a great idea!
Someone just emailed me today asking wether it would be legal selling origami (!), so I guess that could be one of the FAQs!
  • Where do I find model X ?
Is there a link to Model Errata ?
What books do you recommend for beginners ?
How do I join the Origami List ?
Can I sell the origami I make ?
Where do I find paper ?
    What is Kami?
Where can I find origami books?
Where can I get help ?
Would be some questions to start off with.

Good luck!
