Can anybody help me with either making or buying large rectangles. I'm looking for something like 8 x 1 or longer. I've heard of people taping squares together, but have not tried that yet myself, so I don't know how reliable it is or even exactly how to go about it.

best way is to use paper like wrapping paper that comes on a roll

Have you tried the rolls of paper from http://design.origami.free.fr/boutique/world.htm? I got a couple of those and used part of one to make Lang's Black Forest Cuckoo Clock and it turned out pretty well.
