For anyone who didn't know Joisel has extended his LOTR series to include Gandalf

I just <3 Joisel. I hope he publishes a cp or something for this series soon. A book of diagrams for several of his models would be even better, and with some wet folding tips thrown in, I would be all over that!

I second that. Joisel's work is simply amazing-he truly can breathe life into a piece of paper. And that Gandalf is excellent. I particularly like the gridded part coming from behind him.

As much as I love Joisel's work, no offense, but to me it is not real origami, but more sculpting. Still his crafmanship and work is absolutely breathtaking...

It's still 'real' origami to me for things like this because it is one uncut piece of paper folded in a traditional way. The sculpting, yeah i agree, but at the same time his models can be folded without wet folding. For example his rat and his dwarf can both be folded just like any other model and then at the end you can wet and sculpt it but you don't have to. They don't look as pretty but.... The exceptions to these for me are his masks which have more sculpt than fold but they still look fabulous.

Either way his models are beautiful and he constantly shocks me with the amount of expression his model embody. They are truly beautiful- not to mention I love the whimsicality of them!

Having held these figures, I can assure you that they are real origami.

It goes back to purism-if you agree that more free-form shaping of the paper and wet-folding is origami, then it is origami to you. If not, then feel free to consider it not 'true' origami. It is one's own opinion and will differ from person to person. Whether you agree that it is origami or not, I hope that everyone considers Joisel's work great pieces of art.

I do think he is a genuine artist!

I saw his pangolin once and it is absolutely amazing

Joisel's Gandalf is undoubtedly very impressive. I hope that he's planning to make the Tree Ent too..
I like his advanced artistic style which brings out the best out of a piece of paper.

It's not the same as depicted in the movie but to make something proportioned that tall with branch hands and the face amongst the branches and still tree like instead of looking like a crazy mass or split points would be pretty hard.

But I didn't really notice, since I probably was expecting something like from the movie. My next wish is diagrams for his rhino.. or CP woud be great. not that I'm good at solving CP's, but since I love the model so much I would give all my effort to fold it.

Now please tell me that I'm wrong again about the rhino..

Not that I know of. I want cps for ALL of his models, I'm not overly picky on which one. He really needs to come out with a book. Soon!
