So, because I've started a very nice discussion concerning movies and books, I'm going to realise the encouragement of Daydreamer:

What are your favorite books?

My list:

1. The Hitchhiker´s Guide To The Galaxy:
   By far the best one I know; marvin, the paranoid android - mind-boggling
2. The Meaning Of Life:
   the first book of douglas adams I´ve got to know.
   I read it some 20 years ago at school: try to remain calm and serious during some psychology-lesson, while reading the definition of "wimbledon" ...
3. douglas adams Dirk Gently series:
   it´s amazing, how totally different and not connected plots fit together at the end.
   I would really want to know the plot of The Salmon Of Doubt (it is not going to be finished by douglas adams, since he died 2001 )
4. Lord Of The Rings:
   as mentioned in the topic "favorite movies" I like reading books, with all the fantasy-pictures wchich my mind produces
5. The Name Of The Rose:
   especially the parts of the book describing how the library-maze is solved.
6. Gödel, Escher, Bach by douglas r. hofstadter:
   I´m working on this one for years ...

On the way to work (15 to 20 minutes by subway) I prefer thrillers, like Dan Brown, Robert Ludlum or Tom Clancy for example, some kind of "easy reading" ...

I totally agree with Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy being one of the best book series ever written. I hope you have read the original English version though. I read a bit of the German translation once and isn't half as funny as the original.

I like Lord of the Rings too, although of J.R.R. Tolkiens works my favourite is "The Silmarillion".

I really love all the works of Tad Williams, my favourite being the Otherland Saga, a cool mixture of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

I also like most of the books by Stephen King (and I've almost read all of them). His masterpiece in my opinion is the Dark Tower series which has links to a lot of his other books, kinda bringing them all together.

In general I love long, thick books, and even better a series with a lot of long thick books (that also includes Harry Potter, btw). For series I usually buy the next volume coming out right when it's available and usually have finished reading it in at most 2 days..... after which I have some long months of waiting for the next volume again, which can be perfectly used for rereading the previous volumes of the series

Oh yeah, and on the way to work (15 to 20 minutes by subway) I prefer plain sheets of square paper for folding

I'm a huge fan of Salman Rushdie. I read Haroun and the Sea of Stories when I was younger, and Midnight's Children, The Moor's Last Sigh, The Ground Beneath Her Feet, and the Satanic Verses when I was old enough to understand them. Since I read the Satanic Verses, I've been trying to read through all of his books. I even saw him speak in Chicago now that he's come out of hiding.

- Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice"
- The "Lord of the Rings" trilogy (who doesn't?) also a "Tolkien Miscellany"
- The "Lost Years of Merlin" series by T. A. Barron
- Brian Jacques' two "Castaways of the Flying Dutchman" books

These are just a few. I think many people that are into origami like to read books. I have a feeling that this will be a popular post .

i only read manga. regular books are too long!

I loved both A Confession and The Death of Ivan Ilych and Other Stories. On a related side-note What Men Live By is mentioned several times in Solzhenitsyn's, The Cancer Ward.

Ondrej.Cibulka, since you appear to be Czech I'll add that Karel Capek's books are great too.
