Also, just to throw this out there... Kamiya said that when designing the model, he had in mind a character icon drawn in 8x8 resolution, which means he was designing it based from one of the earlier FF games. My guess would be a chocobo most likely from FF 7 or earlier

FF VII was a futuristic Final Fantasy, I don't believe I ever saw a chocobo in it.

Razzmatazz...which version of FFVII did you play? It had chocobos all over the place...unless you mean FFVIII...which had fewer chocobos...although you COULD ride them, if you found them!
