Leidygra from "Pajarita" votes for Zoetrope by merryclaude:
I like many of them.. the abacus seems very practical and a great idea... simple and it works! I love the toothpick-holding-frog by prefo, but I can't vote for my friends and I think it's missing something to win my vote. I don't know why :? I like the ZOETROPE and I find it useful (a little out of date... but it's pretty. I can't really see it working in the video, since he couldn't get to film it right, but I love the idea, I think I'll give it my vote despite my doubts :?. I would love to have it with me in order to be more certain ;).

Vote for Leydigra's game set. Incredibly cool that you can play many games with a single modular unit... OF PAPER! Don't have the games? No mater, just fold'em! It seems to me that you can also dissassemble them to be carried around easily. My favorite is definitely the connect four.

Note: all models submitted here were really cool as well.

Re: Voting in the Inter-forum challenge

Post by firstfold »

Whenever asked to be a judge or vote for someone else, I try my very best to be as objective as possible. I weighted “Useful” and “Amazing” equally. I did not compare the “goal” of one object to the “Goal” of another because to me that is like saying “Art”, “Science” or “Sports” can be judged to be more important for the quality of life. Instead, I tried to compare each entry to a non-origami item in terms of “usefulness” and to see how many similar items were folded by other Origami folded as one way to derive a degree of “Amazing”. In other words, if only one person had an origami design for the stated purpose then the entry might be considered as “More Amazing”. To derive a score for “usefulness” I based my score on how well the “Origami” item compared with something that met the same goal that was “NOT origami”.
The one that came up with the most points was the “Condiment Shakers” by dargerlirli I gave it one of the highest “Usefulness” scores. It seems that a paper condiment shaker is relatively easy to fold, can serve for a variety of granulated substances, is inexpensive when compared to non-origami items, and the appearance is attractive and to some degree stylish. My wife likes to have individual salt and pepper shakers for every person at a small gathering of people. Everyone could have their own color scheme. You might think that individual packets as served at fast food restaurants are comparable but these are limited to the prepackaged contents and are hardly as stylish and could not be reused.
While there are many kinds of origami containers created in the past, I found none quite like the Shaker that had a different opening for adding and dispensing the contents. Other items did score higher on my scale for the “Amazing” quality but the combined score came out at least one point higher than any other entry for this challenge. I congratulate all on your creative entries, I thought this was a wonderful challenge!.

Mr_D from "Vietnam Origami Group" votes for Flapping Crane Bookmark by shangoob:
It is not only useful but also very nice and very much origami.

ttsan from "Vietnam Origami Group" votes for Lampshade by Ekaterina: Looks simple yet very beutiful. Changing kinds of paper or electric lamp colours can result many different light effects, and using thin plastic sheets can also strengthen the longevity.

malifold wrote:When do we find out what the judges voted for?
I just received the lists of favorites from the judges.

Didier Boursin made a small mistake with his. He forgot that he could only choose one model per participant for his list. Being so, I have asked him the favor of correcting it.

So we have to wait a little longer to announce the the answer of each judge. We'll introduce the three lists simultaneously.

-SEBL- from "Pliagedepapier.com" votes for Abacus by Kaze:
This is a very simple model but shows the need of research from the creator, which makes it inmediately surprising and useful, if we know how to use an abacus...
___________________________________________________________________________________________

vincent-origami from "Pliagedepapier.com" votes for Citygami by Julien Gritte: Love that model, I hesitated a lot with your fountain pen malifold, sorry...
___________________________________________________________________________________________

Julien Gritte from "Pliagedepapier.com" votes for The Nose - An Eyeglass Stand by jeko: This is very useful, nice-looking and funny. A very good balance regarding the challenge´s criteria.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

argil from "Pliagedepapier.com" votes for Condiment Shakers by dargelirli: Many of the models are excellent. I regret not having more votes, then I would include the citygami of Julien, the zoetrope of merry claude, the abacus of Kaze , the square and the pedestal of vincent, voodoo doll of Sunburst and the nose which also deserved a vote. There should be given several awards, like the Caesars, one for the most beautiful presentation, one for the most humorous than the original, etc...
I solved this choosing problem with the question : if I was allowed one (and only one of these models) to choose? Being selfless, it would be too easy for me: I would give Julien's Citygami to my dear and loving wife, but since I cook...

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Merryclaude from "Pliagedepapier.com" votes for Abacus by Kaze: Because it actually serves its utility. It is amazing in its simplicity, it is surprising and prized because of his single square sheet used. In two words: simple and efficient!
___________________________________________________________________________________________

Kaze from "Pliagedepapier.com" votes for "To Be or Not To Be?" by anermak: Note that I had to face a moral dilemma. Indeed, both models really appealed to me: this one and the Zoetrope by Merryclaude.
The reasons that made me switch:
-The usefulness: the zoetrope in my opinion is more an action model than a practical one. I am often indecisive (this vote being one example) then an object for making choices is perfect for me.
-The humor: the subject is a bit wacky, absurd to the limit (fold this huge machine to make a simple choice) which shows a "mad inventor" side that I like!

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Eseban2000 from "Pliagedepapier.com" votes for Dustpan by ttsan: I've decided to prefer the usefulness, a 1:2 rectangle is easier to find then a 21x25 and it's folding process seems easy. I put on my glasses in the dark, so under does circunstances the Nose by jeko wouldn't last that long.
So I loose my dustpan more times than my glasses. The idea of the dustpan has an ecological side if we can use cardboard boxes for recycling by folding the dustpan out if them. I also liked the surprise of discovering someone who was thinking of its design and folding process.

Choosing only one was a big big dilemma. It's a real shame that we did not have the right to make a list with 5 choices.

For the trouble I give you mine:
2-Jeko: The Nose - An Eyeglass Stand, for the astonishment, the originality of the subject, the beating of my heart: lov:
3-Vincent origami: Pointed Square, for the usefulness of the object and humorous presentation, its convincing marketing.
4-Dargelirli: Condiment Shakers, for aesthetics.
5-Anermak: To Be or Not To Be? Because today, I would have really needed it! (But it would 've probably been a nightmare to fold)

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Malifold from "Pliagedepapier.com" votes for the Fountain Pen:
I do not like to vote for myself, but I think my work is the most useful, though certainly less surprising that the zoetrope for example ...
2 - abacus kaze: I like the simple design
3 - voodoo doll of Sunburst: very original and well-folded
4 - Citygami Gritte Julien: I was reluctant, but I think it looks a little too sewed ...
5-The nose of jeko: I do not loose my glasses, but it's frankly very well located
Also To Be or Not To Be?, Lampshade, Zoetrope, Pointed Square, Garbage Can, etc. ...

The herd instinct: everybody votes for condiment shakers

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Ray95 from "Pliagedepapier.com" votes for the Condiment Shakers by dargelirli: It's tough to choose a model that combines usefulness and astonishment. Many folds were amazing but not that useful.

So I chose the condiment shakers because it is a useful model I would use a lot. I would fold it in a small format for picnics. Is it astonishing? Yes, for its ingenuity and aesthetics.

THIS ARE THE LISTS FROM THE JUDGES

Latter on today I will announce the winners and finalists!

ANGEL ECIJA

Well, the time has come and I see the creator's joy and hope in all of them and that's why they all deserve my respect. But since I must make my decision, I'll tell you which are my favorite, even if I'll surely have my mistakes. I am reassured by the fact that there are more judges to correct me. I assume that they were all made without cutting or pasting. I find it difficult to weigh the utility along with the design and the astonishment factor.

The astonishment factor and the design is easier to see at first glance. But I found out that it's harder to judge their utility, since their duration can be short due to the paper.

This is the order I decided in order of preference, without being quite sure:

1. "Condiment Shakers" by dargelirli: 5 points
It's nothing more than a box with an acceptable design, but I was surprised with the ingenuity in this new use. And, of what I can see from the video, it looks like it works well and it can last.

2. "Dustpan" by ttsan: 4 points
It has a nice design and looks easy to fold. I think, it accomplishes its task well, although not for long.

3. "Sleeve for CD / DVD & Liner Notes" by thebigbluevan: 3 points
I have a liking for the pocket for liner notes. Even though there are diagrams for other CD sleeves, the detail of the second pocket will probably make people prefer this one over the rest, I, particularly, fold them but it's always a hastle to have to write everything down on the sleeve.

4. "Garden Labels" by argil: 2 points
It can accomplish well it's task an I was surprised by it.

5. "Citygami" by Julien Gritte: 1 point
Although all of its models look great, I prefer the whole set.

___________________________________________________________________________________________

DIDIER BOURSIN

I prefer more simple subjects. When it's too complex, you can't explain the step by step folding process very quickly. I don't choose projects with metal sheets.

1. "Sleeve for CD / DVD & Liner Notes" by thebigbluevan: 5 points
It's a folding that answers simply to the subject in a few folds.

2. "Condiment Shakers" by dargelirli: 4 points
These boxes are a very good idea for spices :)

3. "Bracelet" by Ray95: 3 points
For sustainable development, it's a good project enabling to recycle the paper wastes.

4. "Phone & MP3 Stand" by vincent-origami: 2 points
Nowadays, it can be usefull for mobile phone and mp3 player.

5. "Martie's box" by ebesan2000: 1 point
This box is very useful, simple and elegant.

___________________________________________________________________________________________

LARRY HART

1. "Voodoo Doll" by Sunburst: 5 points
This seems to have the most uses! It also made me laugh and I think not much origami usually does that.

2. "Sleeve for CD/DVD & Liner Notes" by thebigbluevan: 4 points
Very useful it means you don't have to go out and buy a sleeve when you do a cd for a friend – I have seen others but not as pleasing in the design, it look quite easy to make.

3. "Mobil Phone Stand" by snowblue: 3 points
This is something I would make and use quite often

4. "Don Quixote Bookmark" by leidygra: 2 points
I really enjoyed the way this book mark can double as a money clip.

5. "Glovebox" by -SEBL-: 1 point
Showcases the true versatility of an origami object.
