Monthly Design Challenge September 2019
Posted: September 6th, 2019, 2:55 pm
Hi everyone. The September challenge is starting a little late... so sorry for that. Your mission is: create an original tato during this month. "What's a tato?" you may ask. It's a type of origami envelope that has certain specifications; I explain them in the rules ("What's mandatory"). Tatos are among the first types of origami that were created. They have existed since the time of the samurais. So through this challenge you'll be honoring the history of origami!
What’s mandatory
-The model must be flat.
-It must close completely and over its center.
-It must be folded from a circle or a regular polygon (equilateral triangle, square, pentagon, hexagon, etc.). Please state the shape of the sheet in your post.
-It must end up with either rotational symmetry or reflection symmetry.
-It must be opened by pulling opposite tabs, flaps, tips, pockets, etc.
-It must tend to be just as long as it is wide.
-Show your tato both closed and open.
What’s allowed
-Very little cutting. Please state if it does include cuts in your post.
-Very little gluing. Please state if it does include glue in your post.
-More than one model per origamist. Each model participates independently.
What’s recommended
-Think carefully of the material used for folding (color, texture, type of material).
-Take the best picture, or pictures, you’re able to.
-If your tato opens and/or closes in an amazing way, show that in a video.
I'll have more than one judge, they'll be local origami friends that don't participate in online origami communities (like this forum). The judges will take into consideration the stated details (shape of sheet, cuts?, glue?).
I advice against it, but if you really need to look for examples of existing origami tato to get started, you can find many examples by searching through Google Images. There's also a good number of links to diagrams at Origami Resource Center.
PS: I was owing this challenge theme since October 2016. Nine people had voted in favor of a tato challenge. It was the winning theme along with "world problems". It was a tie. I had to make an executive decision; I chose the other theme. So, if you nine are reading this: participate in the challenge! I know where you live .
EDIT: I added a rule I had missed: "It must tend to be just as long as it is wide". That's another characteristic of tatos.
