I've heard here that people use "baking paper" -- is this parchment baking paper or something else?

It is similar to tracing paper but crisper and thicker

I'll use A3 printer paper for initial designs, move on to A4 paper (printer paper) then kami for display models.

kami is too small for me, I use tracing paper for display models, but i am slowly changing to origamido for display. I do use kami though for the simpler models.

the bigger the kami, the bigger the display...

guys, what material would you recommend for beginners, just to get my finger used to the ordeal? will the material make a really big difference for me, or does it just matter when you're a pro?

use what you can get your hands on. for most of the "classic" models, plain copy paper will do.

my own introduction into "complex" origami ~ 14 years ago was through montroll books. for these, you will need larger squares. it's fairly easy to get a hold of 25 cm kami (ordinary origami paper). most of his stuff from "origami animals for the enthusiast," and "origami for the enthusiast" are doable from that, as are his stuff from "prehistoric origami," and most of the other books from that period.

after that you can graduate to 35 cm kami. this is a bit harder to get a hold of, but will be necessary for some of the harder stuff (sometimes it's not a matter of difficulty, but appendages and whatnot can get small very fast). 35 cm is a good starting size for a lot of kamiya type complex stuff, as well as the first lang insects you fold.

Once you are certain it's not a passing phase I would learn to make double tissue MC, there are several threads about it. It isn't difficult to make and you can make up to 20" squares which is large enough for the majority of models. It's dirt cheap and comes in all kinds of colors.

Most papers will do for initial models.
I've never tried tissue foil, is it good? I know where to get it (www.tissuefoil.com, there's a thread dedicated to it and it is a good site) but i don't know whether to get any because i don't know if it's worth it, also mujii (or something like that) do very cheap kami, there's a thread about that too.

has anybody here ever folded with japanese ethereal paper? it has a texture similar to thai unyru but thinner.

what i like about this paper, is you can dye it to whatever color you want. I kept that one white, but i should have dyed it brown or black.

i got a sheet of mist green from a local art store what do you think i should fold from it?
