I think there's a mistake in Montroll's wasp from Bugs and Birds in Origami. I've tried several times and I run into the same problem. In step 13, page 92, it is impossible to fold the corner to the intersection as shown and I think the geometry is off. This occurs again in step 21 and leads to errors in step 22 and mainly step 36. I carefully tried again but still have the same problem. Is there mistake or am I missing something???
Thanks
Alan

Well, I just got through step 22 with no problem. I think this may be an approximation he's using in steps 1-5, but it's close enough that unless you're using really big paper, the difference shouldn't be giving you problems.
I'm guessing that you made an error in either step 4, or step 11. In step 4, the fold needs to go *through* the left corner, and put the bottom corner onto the middle line; this makes a 60º angle with the upper left side of the square. In step 11, make sure that you're folding through the landmarks shown, and not just folding the edges to the center.
Honestly though, this is a kind of awkward model, and it's probably not worth the effort if you're having trouble with it that early in the sequence. John Montroll has much better models to offer.

Yeah I thought I made mistake in step 5 or 11 but i carefully have done it 3 times now and I get the same issue at step 13 where the geometry does not work out --- It's close but makes it akward and imprecise later in the model.
Maybe Montroll is making aproximation but I'm surprised its off so much.
Thanks
Alan

Re: Error in Montroll wasp? (Bugs and Birds in Origami)
Well I figured out the error. The sequence of folds at the beginning to find the reference point is not accurate and you won't be able to fold the model really.
I reversed engineered the CP of the base and used ReferenceFinder to find the reference point.
Here's what I got.

Kinda disapointing to spend money on a book with such an error in it.
If anyone wants the CP for the base let me know and I'll post it.

Disappointing to spend money on a book with such an error? Are you serious? Is your supposed problem affecting the other 27 models in the book?
I just tried it, and it works fine. And the book is $10, not like it's Origami House or Nicolas Terry.

Re: Error in Montroll wasp? (Bugs and Birds in Origami)
Montroll seldom uses exact reference points. Although this one is considerably off, its actually a pretty basice reference point. I spend $40 a year on tantiedan convention books and those are always guaranteed to have atleast 5 models with very inaccurate reference points. My advice to you- if it bothers you that much that one model out of 28 models has an inaccurate reference point that you feel cheated out of $10, just learn how to find them yourself.
Re: Error in Montroll wasp? (Bugs and Birds in Origami)
that sounds like a bit much. do you mean reference points, or errors in the diagrams? i can usually surmount the latter, and have no idea on how to find reference points myself (well, a vague idea). i.e., there aren't always 5 models that i can't do from each tanteidan because of reference points.

Honestly, I am really just picky when it comes to reference points. The errors would not be noticed by most people, but to me, it just really sticks out when a reference point just doesn't fit. For example, most of Fernando gilgado gomez's models have very inaccurate reference points (when he's not using simple division or boxpleating) like his t-rex from Tant 15 and his dragon heart model, just to name a few. You probably didn't notice those, but I just can't stand approximation.
