Something like this would have made sense to me:

The drawing is a little off, I did it on my phone. :-P

Print the CP, lay it over your sheet and just mark the creases by copying the CP on the printed sheet with a ballpen.
Don't worry gachepapier, you didn't come across as rude or anything. By the way, I've seen your models before ... very cool. There is one that starts with a C that is a woman with tentacles ... I love that one. Oh, and the soldier mask.
Thanks - the Cecaelia , shame her face's so ugly  - but I do like the soldier mask a lot :D

gachepapier: I think her face suits the character :-) When I had first seen it, I got creeped out. Reminds me of something from a movie.

And yes, the soldier is really neat.

JumPurge and gachepapier, I think I cracked it! After a sleepless night of reading angles and looking at JumPurge's instructions, I made the folds. Crude, yes, but I traced them for better clarity:

Here's what I ended up with. Now, to get the lines inside the hat, I was basically pinching the paper while meeting the creases ... is that normal practice? And here's one crease I was hoping to find a reference for:

Image

The only way is to just meet up the points, correct? Here's where it goes when folded ...

It does meet a certain point, but I would never know the angle. Perhaps I'm just better off pinching and getting to where I need to be for certain parts. I'm just trying to avoid overworking the paper.

Hm, my phone hates rotating pictures apparently :$

Like I said, that's basically just a crane base :P Not really much for reference if you can fold a crane from half a right angle triangle... cut diagonally. :P

JumPurge: I've folded a crane the regular way, but not split for something like this. I can see what you mean though, just by imagining the first few folds.

Hm, never mind. Better off to pinch those two lines I guess. Too hard to try to fold half a crane base with all the extra paper. My brain can't figure it out.

its alot easier just to pinch those 2 folds then to try to figure out how to make a (just random) 82.69 degree angle

orislater: Yeah, you're right. The only tricky thing is to not overwork the paper.

To be honest, for the whole model I am not sure. I'm pretty sure Joisel used fairly large paper though ...

Are you doing the whole mermaid or the bust? Sounds like you're doing the whole mermaid.
