in his hermit crab diagrams...(do a google search if you don't have them...i usually don't condone this, but who cares....i need help)

step 153. what the hell is it telling me to do?

It looks like a kind of half-squash where you flatten the crab part and tuck it somewhere between the layers of the shell.

i figured that part out...i guess that it is just impossible with origamido paper or something. i'll have to add some MC to stiffen it and let it dry overnight...maybe then it will work.

For me it looks like some kind of pleat (if you look at that arrow closely, maybe squash as was said before). Try to "slide" the crab in and somehow open it I see this diagram for the first time so sorry I have no knowledge how to do that

thats kinda what i was thinking...i tried something like that, and it worked, but like i said. origamido is kinda floppy paper, so it didn't really hold.

oh well. thank you guys for your help. i will try both ways and see if it works.

Hey Phillip, I have nothing against you but I gotta tell ya this.

Don't tell people you've torrented (I dont torrent things and never will, just saying) those diagrams, as you'll earn yourself a horrible reputation. Plus, you should respect those authors and JOAS. Kamiya spent so much time on those diagrams that it suprises me that people torrent those.

If you made diagrams for one of your models and spent soooooo many hours on it, and then someone torrented those and made your work all over the internet, like torrented all over, would you like it?

Considering i've been in a couple convention books myself, I absolutely hate that those are on the internet, so watch what you do Phillip!! I'd stop torrenting right now if I were you. You told me you own books and I respect that but you don't have right to torrent things.

honestly, i have no good response to this. you are completely right. i know that i don't have a right to torrent things, and i know that it is wrong. there really is no excuse for doing it, although, i do say that if i own a book, it is perfectly legal and fair if i have a PDF copy along with a real copy.

i'm not making this model anymore, either. i can't do step 153 with the paper i was using. i'm probably going to make something else out of it.

i'm sorry for asking about the diagrams. where is the CP? is it legal?

what kind of paper can you use (size and kind)?
I have 60 cm x 60 cm bond paper. Its really thick though, and its not that strong either . Its kind of like really big printer paper that is a bit weaker. Would it work with this model?

no, that would not work at all.
I used 40 cm origamido (thin as hell) and i still ran into thickness issues, especially around the claws and legs. you need a large, thin, and crisp paper to make this one.

so... how do you guys do this model.

i assume with step 153, you "fudge" the inner layers.

i'm particularly frustrated by the paper needs. japanese foil just wouldn't survive 121-7 without reinforcing tape underneath, which would create thickness issues.

some thin kraft from origami shop works circumvents that, but it's so flimsy that everything keeps falling apart by 164, so it's hard to make subsequent steps neatly through all the layers. then i just don't see how one gets from 169 to 170, the model keeps falling apart.

Well I used a 45cm square of tissue foil for the model and it worked out fine... There's pictures on my Flickr if you want to see the finished result. In my opinion the model is (apart from some of the sinks) quite easy. The steps you are having trouble with are not the hard to fold just difficult to explain in words
Step 153 you don't need to 'fudge' anything. The inner layers just get stretched, you have to make some creases which are not shown in the diagrams for it to work neatly.
Step 169 is just a simple crimp but you open the body out whilst doing so to make it flat and no longer folded on half.
