Grim Reaper--Miyamoto Chuya

Hi!

I'm having trouble with steps 82-84. Are they actually supposed to be folds, or it is just precreasing for steps 85-87?

As far as I can tell, they're supposed to be folds.

(I read somewhere that there's virtually no pre-creasing in the model, so that's pretty much the basis for my conjecture )

It looks like you're pulling a layer of paper out (marked by the star), kind of like a reverse sink.

Your're right, there is no precreasing for this model - not a single step!
For that step you are, like joe the white said, releasing a layer of paper. But it's all done inside the model, and is difficult to explain. Pulling the paper the way the diagrams suggest should cause a flap of paper to "pop loose" from the other interior layers - you may have to listen for it. It's all very clever, the way it folds itself, but you must follow the diagrams closely.
I only figured this out the second time I folded it with some thick paper where I could feel it happening.
Best of luck!

Miyamoto Chuya made a mistake on these... See the link below on his Flickr with corrections (step 82-84)

For Step 85, is it actually possible for that star to lay on the incenter of that triangle? :?

Yes it is. Keep in mind the triangle is actually within the model. It is a partially X-rayed step.

EDIT: I've done this four times now and I believe it is a mistake. The triangle is folded along the the crease made in 82 not the incenter. It does not interfere with the the rest if the folding sequence.

Hello,

I believe I have spotted a mistake in the JOAS 2012 special issue.

If you look at the top flap from steps 40-44, where it shows to crease and unfold (40), once at step 44 it is completely folded on /both/ sides, despite no appropriate instructions to do so.

Could somebody please help me out with this?

Yes, it looks like you are right. Just fill in the missing steps, there are mistakes in the diagram from what I can remember. :)

Am I supposed to repeat all steps on the other side, or just the minimum to obtain the shape?
