start off simple, and then just practice and practice and then go up a level.
you will be an advanced folder soon enough if you do this :D

...meaning that you want to become a professional origamist? "Amateur" just means "one that follows a pursuit without being paid for it." "Professional" implies the opposite: one for whom a pursuit is a profession -- that is, for which they are paid. For a professional origamist, origami would be a paid job or career.

I suspect you meant that you're a novice (beginnner) but would like to be an expert. A noble pursuit, and this forum will certainly help you on your way!

for paper you could use tissue foil or double tissue for advanced things.
i listed these two especially because they both have youtube videos on how to make them.
P.S thanks Sara for making those videos

i'm a little late but....

learn the folds and memorize them (valley, reverse, sink, etc)
test your skills every now and then... try a hard model, fold with damaged/crumpled paper, smaller sizes
set a goal each time you fold

as for materials i would say experiment with them. some people like foil, others like print. some even like animal hide.

if anything i would work on trying to prevent that xD

as for advice on how to get better, just practice and experiment ^_^ figure out how and what you like to fold and just keep doing it. if it works for you then stick with it.

Welcome

The Israeli origami center should have some good tips on local paper & book options for you.

@Draco:
Elephant Hide is just another kind of paper and no animal hide. I think the name shall only suggest that the paper is as strong as elephant hide, but no animals where hurt during production.

Amir,

I second InsomniacFolder - you should most definitely get in touch with Paul and Miri of the Israeli Origami Center - more than tips about paper and books, the Israeli origami community is thriving with some great talent - you will get a lot out of going to meetings and talking to them.

As for larger sheets - When I lived in Israel I used to often visit Arta in Tel-Aviv - it's a good source for interesting papers.

And for books, take a look at my book review pages and see if there's anything you like:

Israel is unique in that you can still find some classic books by Robert Harbin, and they are published in Hebrew. They are not the easiest books, but are a great addition to your collection... I believe they are inexpensive.

Also, go to your local library an ask the librarian. And you might try using cheap copy paper for your first models, just to get the practice.

Thank you very much, I make contact with Israeli origami, and I wanted to ask you what kind of paper you use and what its price?, I just want to compare prices and type of paper.
