Paper folding help

Post by adethecat »

Hi,
Many apologies if this is the wrong place so please feel free to move or delete if this is the case. I have tried everywhere with no joy!
Anyway I hope someone here can help, I have a business card which i wish to fold into a square tube. The edges need to be held togeather so it doesn't spring open... no glue though!
I have attached an image... I hope some can help,
cheers,
Ade

first of all this is an origami forum! not paper craft!
2nd i know how to hold it shut but i dont think you are experienced enough to do so (judging on the fact that you didn't know what origami is)
i can make a short video sometime soon though. Be patient.

Orislater, origami is a subset of paper craft. Furthermore, adethecat specified that he doesn't want to use glue, which makes it quite related to origami or at the very least kirigami.

Oh, and please do explain how one would require experience in origami to fold a tube from a business card? There is really no reason to try and belittle others..

Adethecat, approximately how thick is the paper you're working with? Is the reason that you don't want to use glue that you want to be able to fold and unfold it? I might have an idea on how to make a relatively sturdy construction using only three cuts and no glue. Will try it out tomorrow, to see whether it's a viable option. If it is, I'll make sure to post it here.

Hi,
I don't want to start a fight! Paper cuts can be quite nasty!

It's 350 to 400gsm card.

Cheers,

Adethecat, it will probably be incredibly difficult to fold such thick paper without tearing it or at least damaging the paper, unless you moisten it (also called "wet-folding"), but that would probably make the ink bleed.

I'll get back to this topic once I've tried some things out. Maybe I can come up with a solution.

most "pro" digital color printers use toners that are akin to plastic dust, instead of being liquid inks. ie, get these done at a print shop with digital laser presses. the paper will come apart before the ink itself will smear. scratch maybe, but not smear! also, if the paper is pre-scored/creased in this simple pattern, it will give nice strong corners since nothing overlaps.

Even with pre-scoring though, you're likely to see a little white on the crease as the plastic layer of color cracks away from the surface.

Hi,
Thanks for all the tips!

The card is being die cut and pre-scored so should fold ok, just need a way of keeping the thing together!

Cheers,
Ade
