how to read a 3D origami diagram

I might make this

but i have no idea how to read the diagram :
can anyone explain how?

I'm not sure, since I have never made them, but I think this is how it's need to be read.
As I see it, the body is made from a cylindrical shape. So when you check the body part, the last triangle need to be put in the first triangle (as far as I know those molecules have 2 pockets) So basically each row is a circle and you built on them.
Dunno if this is completely correct but seems most logical to me

Can't help further though.

oh, golden venture? i used to make these when i was little. basically, you connect the triangle pieces ( if you know how to make them ) into the grid shown. up means you point them reversed.The triangles are moduals. The ones pointed down, you point them regularly. These kind of models are modular making hell, so you need ALOT of patients. Still don't know what i'm saying? well either buy a book of '3D Origami' or look in:

I assume that the notches you are talking about are the ones around there the back would be and on the feet, right? Judging from the picture (not seeing the back is annoying), the slits look like pieces jutting out really far, or pieces that are inserted upside down, seeing as they are in places a piece would not normally fit
