CP Analysis Column

Post by OrigamiMagiro »

A large amount of discussion has centered around the direct design of crease patterns [Lang, etc.]. However, in my experience, a lot of origami design intuition comes from analyzing the works of others from a quantitative and objective point of view in order to learn how others have already solved origami design related problems.

I hope to begin writing a regular column for The Fold, not about origami design itself, but instead on the critical analysis of origami crease patterns hoping to touch on some of the following topics:

* Methods to extract tree structure from existing crease patterns
* Checks for typical crease patterns concerning flat-foldability, consistency, and other errors
* Tips to fold from crease patterns
* Estimating M/V assignment on unassigned crease patterns
* High-level quantitative, qualitative, and subjective critiques of a design using crease pattern analysis

In order to start this series, I need some crease patterns to critique. Here's where you guys come in. Anyone have a design they're working on that I could use as an example to critique? I don't really mind if you think they are not good designs; in fact imperfect or flawed designs/crease patterns are almost more preferable for the first few articles so that I can concentrate on the basics. After the basics are out of the way, we can move on to analyzing the works of more veteran designers, exploring both their genius as well as possible critiques to their designs.

What I am looking for is a vector drawing of a crease pattern you have drawn, a photograph of a cleanly folded model, and permission to use them in a published critique. In return, you get a lengthy article providing honest feedback on your design, with the caveat that it will be publicly published in The Fold. Please contact me personally if this is something you would be interested in.
