Help designing a model

Post by Sroge4 »

So, I've never designed a model before, but I thought I'd give I'd give it a shot with an Origami Cthulhu.

I thought I'd try box-pleating for the model, and I watched Tadashimori's video for help with the circle packing. I drew up a test-CP for it (will post pics in a minute when my camera charges), but I want some suggestions on how to improve it (I'm not quite sure the CP is really foldable, so making it foldable would be a good thing  )

Anyway, All I've done with the CP so far is circle-packed a head, a couple tentacles (for the face), two arms, two legs, and two wings.

Thanks!

Can you post a picture of the cp?

I 'think' I know.
Youre trying to mix diagonal and horizontal/normal boxpleating.
At the bottom left and top right of the square are the examples of regular/normal boxpleating, the rest of the square is diagonal.

So I would fix it by making the rest of the model "normal" boxpleating? And the distribution of paper work here for the different flaps I need?

Not really, if you are going mostly 1 way, swap weird flaps that dont fit THAT ONE WAY.
Soooo make it all diagonal boxpleating by making the bottom left and top right hand units pleat - sunk - fish bases.

yeah haha that wont work XD (sorry i cant help laughing) creases cant just terminate when they hid a different crease like they do in your cp. i think you need to start over from scratch and either choose a diagonal grid or a horizontal/vertical grid. i think you can work it out from there haha

hahaha its ok i suck at it too but remember when there is a crease intersection the number of creases touching a point always has to be even (unless on an edge) and there is always 2 more mountain creases than valley creases or vice versa. these 2 rules have saved my ass when about to fold a crease pattern than i realize its not flat foldable and i quit hahaha

Don't be discouraged. At least you're making the effort to make your own model, which is impressive in my books. Keep working at it and don't give up.

I agree with hobbestheprince. And you don't have to start from scratch since you already have the paper where it needs to go (you know how much paper you'll need for this part, etc.), which is the hard part in my opinion, so you just have to redo the creases

yes your packing will work i think! it might be easier to use circle packing and just fill it with rabit ear molecules

do you want me to try to figure out the circle packing for you and upload it? im not the best at it but i think i can get it done and it would be good to get the experience anyway lol
edit: i just started and realized your circles on the cp are F-ed up. can you draw the circles on the original cp with a compass please? then ill try it and it will be fun
