alright, think i got it.
part of the difficulty, as i stated before, is i think that the diagrams are for the "original" version of the vampire.
you can actually see here at the top of the wings the duo color effect of the VOG paper. this is slightly different from the photographed version in the VOG book, where these flaps are not visible, and have to have tucked away.
here's what i did.
instead of making the mountain fold flush with the edge, i use the circled reference point. if you do the mountain this way, it gives you leeway to squash the ears the way you see in the photos. if you make it completely flush, you won't have enough paper.
i also like the pull down the blue flap, which is actually connected to the flap with the red edge. you can line it up with the tip of the wing as indicated by the green line, and that is what i think gives quyet that extra edge to curl in the photographed model.
lastly, it is worth noting that he does NOT divide the wings as diagrammed either. the diagrammed version uses the horizontal lines as the reference from the tips of the wing. if you do it that way, the wing will only have three points. but you see in the photo that he has four. there are actually old creases near the claws which i used as another reference point--you can see it in the above photo. i then took the lateral tips of the wing, and divided the area between the tips and the reference point in three.
whew. anyway. a great model, and i'm pleased to have the diagrams for the base.
