Origami Gifts
Hi,
Does anyone make and give Origami as gifts to their friends and family? I've made some a couple of times, folding little boxes and putting a K-rose inside.
What sorts of gifts do you make? What models? How do you present the gifts?

I made some diaramas for my Father, with a fisherman and a Sail fish. I made a origami aquarium for my brother with various fish and a sea urchin. I made my wife a few things also

I like to give origami instead of the gift card.
I used to either fold books, and write the inscription inside; or I would fold peacocks and write the inscription on their tails.
Also, I sometimes paste a Kawasaki rose on the wrapping. It is so much better than the regular ribbon rose people usually put.

I stopped giving origami pieces away. I should better say: I choose, to whom I give them and to whom not. I made the bitter experience, that most people like that little folded something, but throw it away in the next days. for that, the origami piece is to worthy to me. I don't give away easy stuff and I don't want to waste the time for people that don't appreciate it. I used to decorate my gifts with origami pieces formaly, but stopped doing that.

As for giving away origami pieces...
Yesterday I gave an origami demonstration at the Mingei museum. I folded a rose and put it on the table. This chinese woman looks at it, and says that it is lovely. I told her she could have it. She was very excited and took it with her.
Several minutes later, another woman finds the rose on the floor. She bends to pick it up, and one the guards comes and snatches it. She asks me if I could make for her. Of course, I said, and made one for her. This woman, really wanted the rose, and she stood fasicnated as I folded. A moment later another woman had done the same thing...
I love giving origami pieces away. The joy on people's faces is just so great to see. However, I usually don't fold to order. I hate it when people ask me to fold them an elephant (or similar). I like to fold whatever I feel like folding...

I used to love giving away complex models (simply because a lot of people were fascinated at how one piece of paper could be folded to generate so many appendages). However I did often realise that people got bored with them and threw them away!
Just like Chris I'm slightly more hesitant to give away complex models. I don't mind folding K roses (they take less than 5 mnutes now
)but hate it when people tell you to fold X in front of them!
I hope to give away all my models at the next BOS convention I attend (I think Kim (Emma's friend) once gave away the entire 1000 piece swan at the York Convention!). At least I know people will appreciate it!
I also fold for my local library. The staff are always pleased to see new models and proudly display them on the front counter
Off to fold the Yoshino Horse - wish me the best!

Just the other day I gave some gifts to my high school teachers (college starts the 20th
). I gave my English teacher a Kamiya Unicorn (she loves mythology), my Art teacher a Lang Vari-leg Scorpion, and my American History teacher a Rohm(?) Bald Eagle. They very much enjoyed them and said they would add them to their collections. My next visit I plan to give out some more to my other teachers. When I was in High School, I had several requests a day for certain models in certain colors from about anyone (students, janitors, teachers, the principal,etc.). I made probably 50 or so Kawasaki roses in various colors in the first week I memorized it. If I had time and no homework, I usually made them. I have had some rare experiences where my gifts are ripped up or left on the floor, though its usually an accident and fixable. Every now and then I was asked for special envelopes, such as the crane or swak, so I kept a stock of them in my locker. I'm not sure what outlook origami will have in college, my major is now art education, so it may have a nice part in my future. It would be awesome if I could teach an elective in highschool or college, but I don't think the chances are too high.

I've very rarely made models specifically to give as gifts, but I do end up giving a lot of stuff away, just to get rid of surplus origami that's cluttering up the place.
I would usually only give away a particularly complex model if I had already folded another, better version of it, so I'm not that concerned about what people do with my folds. (Though I have had a few people tell me that they still have a Yoda (or whatever) that I gave them years ago.)
Sometimes I fold a model when on the bus and leave it on my seat when I get off at my stop. The model might be sat on, or thrown in the bin, or someone might find it and take it home. Who knows, eh?

If I am making a gift for someone, I always make a modular piece. I can choose their favorite colors and the modular pieces always look impressive. I also only fold for and give to those who I know will appreciate it. I'm happy to say that everyone I have give a gift to still has it proudly displayed in their home or office

I sometimes give away Origami on parties, I fold them there when the music bores me for a moment. I usually get fine response. I usually fold flowers (own designs), dragons and butterflies. I also give away roses but they are reserved for better friends and sweethearts. I once folded 2 "Vallerie Van's magic rose cube" roses as a plate decoration for a wedding couple.

I do Moneygami models as gifts and either box them or attach to the card. This way they get a pretty model and they can unfold it and use as cash also. Works all around. Michael has a pretty cool little box for moneygami out of a coke container so that you can give them as gifts.

I find it pretty funny how new members enjoy reviving 4-year-old topics. I mean, what's the point, the topic owner won't even see it... Really old topics should just be locked in my opinion, but oh well better not get off topic.
I've actually only recently started using origami as gifts, but only to close family members (and even then I sometimes take it back to put it on my display shelf
. ) I folded Lang's Goatfish for my dad on Father's Day, Lang's "Valentine" for my mom on Mother's Day, and made a Kawasaki rose with stem, cylax, etc. for a few of my close friends (who are girls obviously - I don't think I would ever give a guy friend of mine an origami gift Lol.
)

Logical reasons aside, you're posting in this 4-year-old topic too.Drgn wrote:I find it pretty funny how new members enjoy reviving 4-year-old topics. Anyway, I agree with mrsriggins-I also give out moneygami gifts. Around this time, when everyone is having high school graduation parties, I am folding my mortarboard and giving it away. It feels nice to give people a little something special.

Now, for some random stuff that's relevant to the topic. Well, my aunt wants me to fold a ryuzin(3.5) for her. Yeah, right. If I made one I'll probably keep it for myself because there's NO WAY I'm going to fold it twice.
I've fallen down, and I can't get up.
