Sipho Mabona Rhino

Hello Origami Forum,

I'd really like to Fold Sipho Mabonas Rhino, however I don't get how to come up with the reference points for the squares as basis for the crease pattern. I think i can manage from there on. I'd be thankful for any help to find the basic starting points for folding the squares into the paper.

The parallel lines in the upper portion are at 11th's. Hope this helps.

Hmm, it doesn't seem to me that the upper portion are in 11ths; if that was so, then the strip that stradles the horizontal diagonal would be centered around that diagonal, which it is clearly not. Or am I misunderstanding you?

I am not finished deciphering this crease pattern, but I think I found an entry to the framework folds: The lines with red are important: the horizontal diagonal and the line halving the 45 degree angle from the bottom corner. These two lines cross at a point P used by one of the bird folds, so a third line will go through P at a 45 degree angle, parallel to the South-East page border. Fold this line. It then hits the North-East page border at a point Q. Fold the line through Q, parallel to the horizontal diagonal. The horizontal strips in the upper portion are then all 1/4th the height of the length between this new line and the top corner.

I could be wrong but it seems that the starting squares Hanapin was referring to was an 11x11 grid on a 45* angle. I counted the squads at the end of the video and got 11 and I ran the crease pattern through an app that measure everything in relation to one another. (Put the square as 11 units and the grid units come out as 1)
But you are right the red lines are probably the most useful references.

I don't know if you are still having trouble with this, but you also want to fold the vertical crease coming off of P, which can also be accomplished by folding the corner into the intersection of the two red references. After that you can fold it purely off of references, because most of the angles follow 22.5-degree symmetry. The only exceptions are the ones in the middle that form the horn and a few in the tail.

While we're talking about the rhino, I figured out how to fold everything except for the "dry tension locks" that hold the whole thing together. I figured out the one that holds the neck together (I think), and part of the belly, but I am still at a loss for how to close the neck neatly and lock the rhino's behind in place. I know he taught this rhino at the OUSA convention this year, so hopefully there is someone out there who can help me out with this.

I have figured out most of this model, except how to lock down the tail and how to properly close the belly. Can anybody give me some pointers? I would greatly appreciate it!
