oh god, the Maine lobster is probably the most annoying model I have ever folded. Harder than anything in OI2 in my opinion, and I folded nearly everything in that book at some point... Or at leatpst attempted to.

i folded everything in the book 1-2 years ago. my imput on the models:

butterfly: nothing special
Acrocinus longimanus- more complex but still not too hard
Ant- same
Tarantula- has some tricky unsinks that are hard to do, but once you figure them out it's not that hard. it'my favorite model now because it looks really good if you do it right. huge amount of sinks/unsinks and you need some very thin paper, and it's quite hard to shape right. one of the hardest models in the book
pill bug: not that hard and i wasn't impressed with the model either
dragonfly: not too hard, but it's like impossible to shape right, i used the tinnest paper possible (tracing paper) and it still was quite messy and thick at the end
Eupatrus gracilicornus- very long and very hard to shape nicely, it's just not a rewarding model i guess
Scorpion- nothing too hard here, but it looks very good at the end
Flying Ladybird beetle- quite hard, there are some very hard sinks and unsinks as i remember,
Longhorn beetle- quite easy box plating all the way, hard to shape well
Praying Mantis- not too hard, looks really good if you do it out of tracing paper
Periodical cicada- easy, but don't do it, do shizuoka cicada instead it's just as easy and looks much better
Flying cicada- has some ridiculously hard unsinks, and it was a bit disappoining for me as it's completely flat in the end and the legs are too short
Flying grasshopper- ok i didn't do this one
Samurai helmet beetle- the folds themselves aren't too hard but it's quite challenging to shape it well, still if you shape it right it's very rewarding because it's full 3d and looks very bug-like, but you'll need a lot of glue to shape it well
Hercules beetle- quite easy and looks nice
Centipede- not hard, very repetitive and i wasnt really satisfied even though i folded it perfectly

as someone said already, maine lobster is harder than any of these, that one is a b*tch to fold. also the mantis in origami insects 1 has some painful steps that are probably harder than the ones in the insects 2.

afterall I would say lang's diagrams are so good and the painful steps are so rare that none of these is extremely hard. jason ku's butterfly on the other hand made my really angry on 2 occasions

Sorry for the bit off topic post, but what are the ref points for the maine lobster?

I folded the dragonfly with sized origamido. It was painful to fold. Origamido may not be the best paper for the model, or at least my specific origamido. Nonetheless, I found it very very hard to shape, fold, and everything.
Common sense is not that common.

There are too many references to post, I believe you can buy the diagrams for like $2 on OUSA.

Phillip1847: I made an album of the pre-creasing process for the Maine Lobster. Would you like me to post it to Flickr? But Phillipcurl is right, the easiest thing to do is purchase the diagrams via OUSA!

Of course, that would be excellent! I dont understand why its so hard, just a treemaker'd pattern of rabbit ears.

That's why it's so hard :D Treemaker patterns always have insane references

it's just sooper dooper pooper scooper hard! you don't collapse the base until step 12,425! step 36,724 requires you to repeat no less than 253 closed unsinks! the final shaping is so hard, those steps were used to break into a vault in fort knox! for real, the crooks threw the diagrams at 26" of solid steel, and the super hard steps just busted straight through!!! many folders report having to have surgery on their fingers after completing, the model is so hard!!!!!! many orthopaedic surgeons have described irreversible destructive arthritis of the fingers! for many folders, they needed amputation of the fingers, and have never been able to fold again!!!!!! for realz!!!!!!!!!!

hahaha, bethnor. in my opinion. OI2 has some of the most annoying models to fold, but i'd have to say Eco Origami has some of the hardest models in origami. they don't look hard, but shaping them was hard as hell to do correct. Be prepared to set several hours and a ton of methylcellulose and paper to be able to do anything in that book right.

BETH-nor. it is not short hand for anything nor does it have any meaning. it's a pronoun i came up with for a novel i wrote a long time ago.
