It is made by michael lafosse, is created only in small batches, and is rarely available direct from the source (but a limited selection has been available at origami shop for some time). It is thin, strong, and has beautiful character. If you are well practiced and are ready to make a model the you will be keeping as a display piece it is a fine selection.

Personally i have nothing but respect for the work Michael does and this paper is well loved by many complex folders, but it is not a panacea. Like a lot of golfers that think the problem is with their clubs, it still has all of the challenges of folding extremely thin paper.

there is usually have a huge selection available at the Origami USA convention in NYC, and many people load up on it. It is priced a little better than origami shop, as you are buying direct from the source.

Well, besides being handmade, it is made from long plant fibers. Cheaper, low quality paper (EG printer paper) is made from short wood pulp. The way cheaper paper is made on machines, it gets a grain, which rips easily along it; therefore it isn't good for folding complex models or wet folding. Handmade papers such as Origamido or Sekishu have no grain, so they are much harder to rip and generally are more durable. The downside is that you can't control the thickness of origamido you get - I've gotten it thinner than tissue paper and as thick as watercolor paper.

It's a little more than just handmade. It's also archival, excellent for wetfolding, and Michael said that the Frog paper (probably All Origamido paper) can be folded, but if you make a mistake, you don't have to discard the paper. Instead, you can unfold the model, moisten, dry it out, and it's like new again. At the time, it was the only paper with that forgiving quality. .... At the time, I think my paper cost $8.

It is the BEST paper for origami. Nicholas Terry says it on his website. It is very expensive though. :)

Hank- I can get it for $10 on origamishop, but I'm not sure how - its listed as 12€ which is around $14. Its the cheapest place to buy it, I think.

Unfortunely 12€ is a little bit more at my country current coin. But i won't be needing Origamido for a long time :)
Reality is perception.

In fact, I believe that he has. Like much of the Origami community, Michael is very generous, even though he has to make a living. If you look in the front part of Advanced Origami, there's a detailed discussion about paper making. In addition, His Frog CD spends nearly half of the CD talking about making Frog paper.

The recipe is not the 'issue'. The time, patience, technique, and equipment are the issue. However, you can go to his shop and he used to have workshops etc., for making the paper. I believe that Robert Lang buys special batches of paper, and Satoshi Kamiya was famous for spending time (weeks, months?) with Michael learning how to make paper. Phoning Origamido for paper used to be the cheapest way to buy it. (???)

My point is that if you have the time, patience, and money for resources, you could probably learn how to make your own Origamido paper. As far as I know, Michael and Richard used to make batches of paper for their own use, then sell any remainder. I don't think they make much of a profit, if any, in the process ... but I don't think they made the paper for general sales, selling excess mostly as "a favor' to the Origami community.

[Michael, I'm still waiting for my promised kickback sample papers :-) ]

the recipie for origamido
I don't believe there is "the" receipt, as ML has listed in Advanced Origami 3 general purpose ones, and given that the idea of making your own paper is to match it up with a specific origami model, having multiple recipes make sense.

But personally, I'm not going to go that far and create my own paper, for two of the three recipes, the pulp beating time alone is 6+ hours... Plus there's all that equipment ill need to get... Where am I suppose to put them all?!

Yep, there are a few paper recipes in Advanced Origami, but not the specific recipe..
I would rather fail trying than fail without trying....

Sorry, what's origamido again? I missed it the first dozen times it's been explained.

Also, what paper does kamiya use for his models. Particularly the ancient dragon on the cover of WOSK1. I'm absolutely positive no one has discussed that before.

I'm pretty sure it's origamido or some type of mulberry. I'm not sure, but he usually uses expensive papers.
