It's not that necessary. I just skip that step and get along with the model. Nothing happens.

what type of paper would be best for this?
1. Homemade foil
2.terrys foil
3.kraft

1 and 2 will be best for this. Kraft will make it unbelievably thick.

Don't know what your talking about, Kraft would be the best of the three; especially if it were from Terry's shop.

You wouldn't be able to perform this model well with foil of any kind - trust me, I tried. From my 6 times folding it, I have to say either tracing paper (terry's kraft is very similar), double or single tissue depending on the size of the paper you are using, or a handmade plant fiber paper such as sekishu, o-gami, or origamido would work the best.

You can get Kraft paper in many different weights and thicknesses. The thinnest I have is almost translucent, whereas the thickest I've ever seen is almost a bit like cardboard. When I started folding more complex models I had a phase where I folded almost everything from a very thin Kraft paper with a weight of just 32gsm. It is a strong and durable paper. Later on I discovered other papers like for example double tissue that have similar characteristics but have the added bonus of having a wider range of pretty colours. One of the latest additions to those very thin, strong and great looking papers is the iridescent paper that some shops now offer and Nicolas even sells in 60x60cm. This paper definitely would be suitable for the Western Dragon.

Like Anna said, kraft comes in many thicknesses. The type you were thinking of isn't very suitable for origami, I've tried making some things with it before (god knows why, but kamiya's hermit crab) and it didn't work too great. It is the most common type of kraft, though.

For certain things, it is good, but it wouldn't work for a WD. The paper is too small and would get too thick.
