Problem with Robert Lang's tarantula

Post by martigp13 »

I'm trying to fold Lang's tarantula (insects II) but I'm blocked in steps 17-19. I just have one layer to unsink not three. Probably I was wrong in step 12 (i'm not sure). Here's the diagram:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YD5NmqowRwM/U ... 600/t3.JPG

I'm using an ordinary printer foil, i know it isn't the best one, any recommendation? Maybe kraft paper? And what is the righ size?? It's one of the first "complex" models I've folded.

Thanks!

PD: Sorry for my english mistakes, I'm an spanish guy jajaja

Okay, you need to do the step 14 correctly. It's the main fold for the steps your having problem with. And you're probably thinking you'll make a full rabbit-ear unsink on all of them. No, on the first unsink you'll have to convert one full rabbit-ear layer into Valley to mountain and vice-versa. and in the 2nd and 3rd unsinks you'll only unsink the top parts not all of it, since it's not possible to do that.

And you can't use printer foil for the model! Use a strong and really thin paper since it has a lot of layers, like tissue-foil, Tracing Paper or Origamido (If it's too expensive, then Sekishu.) Hope that helped. :)
Oh, and recommended size is 45 cm. :)

Thanks!! I'm going to try again, but with kraft paper. Where can I buy tissue-foil or Tracing Paper? I have gone to all the stationeries in my city and anybody knows what i'm talking about... :x

Thank you so much!

Heey sr123ification!
I have tried what you said but i'm still blocked, here's a pic where i'm right now (kraft paper, 45cm):

For tissue-foil, You're gonna have to get two papers and make the paper in your home: Aluminum Foil and a really thin paper like Tissue Paper (Not Nakpin!). Here's a video on how to make tissue-foil papers:

As for the problem, I am making a video on that whole part you're having problem with. :)

Oh! You can also fold it from a full tutorial made by Jo Nakashima here!:

Tissue foil is a terrible idea for this model, unless you want bulky and wrinkly. Go with thin and strong mulberry, unryu, or washi with MC, or double tissue.
I wish people would stop suggesting Origamido, it's very expensive and shouldn't be for first attempts. It should be for going into a model with full confidence in order to make a nice display piece.

I agree with kareshi, that for this model tissue foil is a bad choice. Doing those unsinks is very hard without ripping the paper. For a first try, cheap paper like kami, gift wrap or printer paper works just fine and it doesn't hurt if you ruin a sheet. If you want to have a thin and strong paper for a display model take double tissue paper.

I had a problem with this part as well - and you might be doing the same thing I was doing.

That first of the three unsinks, make sure you're only getting one layer of paper. It's not obvious in the video, but he does puff out the top bit.

Chuunks, I've tried what you said but the problem is that before the first sink I should have three layers instead of two, so it means that the mistake is in one of the previous steps. I have also checked step 14, as sr123ification said.
I don't know what to do... :x

Still guessing, but I remember thinking at this point also that I had made an earlier mistake. :)

I think it only appears like you don't have the flaps. I doubt you've made a mistake before this point, the earlier unsinks are pretty obvious, and there isn't really anything *too* tricky before this step.

But this step ... this step is rough. I failed hard with my homemade tissue foil because with the first builds, you are really going to need paper with good crease memory for the unsinks. Tant would be great except for it's way too thick at the end for the legs (which is probably why he switched out in the video).

I thought about the step a little more and hopefully can add some clarity. When you do that first unsink of three, make sure (again) that only one layer of paper is being unsunk - the remainder of the paper gets pushed back inside the flap (there is no gap in the center of the top at this point, if you have a gap - this is definitely where you and I erred). The second unsink is pulling that tab outside the flap - now there should be a gap. The third unsink is the remaining paper that evens out the right side.
