Origami Video Game
Hello everyone,
I'm a video game designer looking to make a game about origami. The player will be able to fold together origami creates and bring them to life.
What would you guys expect this game to be like?
Do you think it would be a fun way to teach people folding techniques?
Suggestions for what type of game play to use?
Thanks for any help, the more we get now, the better the game will be.
We are doing this as a student project and plan on making it free, so in the end, if you guys can come up with some cool ideas, you will get to see them when we release the game.
cheers!

i and probably many other origamists would like
i think it would be great for teaching
i would expect it to be like folding and we should be able to choose what kind(not htat it would really matter in a game) and color of paper we would like to use
also there should be mamy many models to choose from if possible
and will this be a computer game???

I would expect this game to be one of a few different kinds:
1) It could probably be made into a game like The Incredible Machine pretty well. You fold objects which you use to construct an obstacle course towards the goal of completing some task. For example, if you need to drop a ball into a bucket, you could fold a crane that picks it up and flies it over and drops it in.
2) If you want to give the game a plot, you have a main character (the player) go through different obstacles in which he'll need some particular object to get past them. Then he'll have to fold that object. This game could be made for designers (i.e. don't give any directions, the player has to invent the object on the spot). Or it could just be for folders (there are a variety of objects they could choose from and then they need to fold it).
Good luck.

Okay, how's this: Pokegami?
It'll be an rpg-style game, along the following lines:
1. The player starts out with a few sheets of paper.
2. He has to wander around to learn new techniques of folding. Here's where you can insert cutscenes to show how the model is folded. Using each technique allows him to 'summon' an origami model.
3. Various models allow for various abilities: boats if the player has to cross a river, bigger boats for seas, animals for combat, etc, etc. Naturally, each application of a folding technique uses up a sheet of paper.
4. Different types of paper allow for different enhancements to the models (more durability, combat abilities, whatever). Colour could be another way of doing these (a dragon folded from red paper breathes fire, one from black paper breathes acid, yeah, I know it's not very original)
5. Techniques can be unlocked either as the player gains a level (boring), or defeats a boss monster, or finishes a quest. Or all three. Don't forget to include the sekret teknik!
6. Plot...uh...find the hidden McGuffin and defeat the BBEG?

id say live action game. the whole story is made by a kid who does origami and plays with them. the main point is to go thru levels and dungeons to finally defeat the boss, umm - not sure what that could be.
anyway, "you"(the kid) have to learn new folds and make more and more complicated origami to go thru the levels as they get harder and harder.

ze evil ameeba will rule all
seems like a really interesting idea to me... even if it sounds hard to put into practice though
anyway, i'd like to know how far you can go regarding programming. would it be possible for you to code an application in which one could actually fold whatever he/she wants? (at a tanteidan convention maybe two years ago there were some mathematicians who presented such a "folding software" for the purpose of demonstrating folding processes... and it appeared to be a quite complex project as there were some typical "origami-phenomenons" e.g. the (increasing) thickness of the paper that needs to be displayed to make the whole thing even look 3D)

You do realise that this topic is 2 years old, right....?Evilameba wrote:id say live action game. the whole story is made by a kid who does origami and plays with them. the main point is to go thru levels and dungeons to finally defeat the boss, umm - not sure what that could be.

This thread is over 2 years old. The author of this thread might not even be alive! So I shall lock it. *lock*. Oh wait, I can't do that.
Anyway, if I were to make the game, it would be in a role-playing style. The main character can fold origami models and use them as actual weapons, in an alternate dimension where everything is made of paper! Throughout the game you will collect various kinds of paper and crease patterns. A new crease pattern is like a new ability. Some models can only be created when you have the right paper, so you need to progress in order to unlock them. Different papers have different strengths and weaknesses. Origami animals and mythical beings will be like familiars or guardians. They help you attack enemies but have their own health and have to be summoned...er folded again when they get killed. Harder models take more MP to create.
All the enemies are origami! When you kill enough of the same enemies you get to learn their secrets and create the crease pattern. This will be how you gain new abilities. There will be hidden secret crease patterns throughout the game which you can use to fold new weapons or familiars. The bosses will all be famous origami models like Kamiya's Cerberus and Ancient Dragon, Jun Maekawa's Devil, Brian Chan's...Wall-E.
Uh, I didn't read Eileen's post before I wrote all this. Never you mind.

That is a lot like what I was thinking of-an RPG style game where you craft items out of paper. That is a great idea for the CPs-they could actually be in the game and you could fold them yourself. The different pieces of paper that you collect could have different attributes, making them more suitable for certain models (e.g. thin paper for complex models, thick for simple, wet-folded ones). You could also collect MC to treat paper with to alter their qualities, dye to change their color (different elements, red=fire, blue=ice, etc.), and scissors to cut them to size. Tessellation patterns could apply to armor, and you could have a familiar that helps you fight and follows you-there would be a limited number of them to have at a time (probably 1), but you would have to use paper to fold them.
If your character was made of paper, he could get CPs (these would probably be more quest-related) to change the form he is in, which would in turn change his attributes and abilities-different forms would be required for different situations. And perhaps the game could even be set in the real world; your character is a spirit that can possess a piece of paper, imbuing it with special powers. Then you could find special pieces of paper that would make your character more powerful overall.
Another, simpler option for the game would be to control a piece of paper that folds itself into different forms to get past certain puzzles. Perhaps these could be traditional models-a crane, a frog, a fish, a cicada.

Or how about an Origami Paper Mario?
He, meaning Mario, was already able to fold himself into a paper airplane in Paper Mario : The Thousand Year Door, so this time he could go one step further and transform into Ryu-jin. Would take him a month to do it, but he'd be insanely strong.
Paper Mario games are RPG's btw.

hey
GAME DISIGNER
you're making an origami video game? I've always wanted someone to make one
once you make it will people be able buy it or something

Here's an Idea this might stink or it might be cool but, how about you make levels for beginners then if the player is good and fold something good they can move to the next level and probably enter tournaments against the greatest origami masters like kamyiya satoshi and brian chan. ect. let me know if you want more ideas. you put like an origami simulation
and your inventory could have like a bone folder and origami paper
I always wanted to fold but didn't want to waste paper just trying to figure something out
