Need some input...

Post by pitboss »

Hi, I'm working on designing a model from scratch, a Dalek to be more specific... I have devised a base/torso that will work with some slight modifications and a little tinkering, it's based off of the Spring Into Action, which makes it easy to get the unusual shape of the base. But the Head/Arms have me baffled (there's a picture below for those of you unfamiliar with a Dalek)...

I've experimented with a few ideas, but nothing seems to come out quite right...The problems stem from the three most prominent features, the Eye Stalk, the arm, and the weapon.

Does anyone have any suggestions of bases/models that I might be able to draw some inspiration from? I know there are a lot of non-traditional bases out there, but I have no clue where to look...

Thanks,
Mac

(Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, it didn't seem to fit anywhere else...)

Well, it looks like this is going to be a challenge for you...
I would guess that you would need to use a boxpleated design to work in the hard lines and the 3D elements-but where to go from there is another question altogether.

My initial take on this is that a tessellation pattern would work well for the bumps on the lower half, and your spring into action idea (for the rings around the head, right?) sounds really good.

With an unconventional base like that, though, I can see how the arms and the eye are a problem...maybe some pleats can be worked in to give you some extra paper to work with for the arms?

whatever you decide, good luck with your Dalek! If you finish it up, I would love to see a picture and a CP!

Could it be possible for you to show a picture of your base? I beleive it would be easier for us to help you then. Also, where is that robot from?

For the moment, it's a multi-piece model, once I get one figured out, then I'll work on making it one piece.

The Spring into action for the body idea, came from trying to fold the SIA, I got frustrated after collapsing one end of the spring, and noticed that it created and intriguing locking mechanism, and a panelled cylinder...Which is one trademark trait of a Dalek's outer shell.

I'm also designing this one in stages. I'm not spending much time working out how to get in some of the smaller details (the bumps, rings under the head, etc etc...). The arms, the eye, and the dome-shaped head are the features I am putting the most effort into right now.

I would go with some kind of octagon squash tessellation. Or if that is too hard, some kind of square or hex tessellation, and then sinking the corners. The bumps are the most noticeable features, not those little arm things.

A tessellation will also give you a whole bunch of excess pleats on the edges to play with, that you could easily create a little eye stalk, arm, weapon, etc. with.

Also, rather than using the spring into action twists, simple pleating would probably work better.

The steps to make it would be:
1) tessellate
2) pleats
3) those little things that stick out
4) roll up into a tube the shape of the dalek.
