Apologies for reviving an old thread, but it was either this or make a new one, and I figured this was slightly better.

Anyway, with November 5th approaching, I've been looking at this model again, but I've never really been happy about how it looks (compared to the one folded by Brian).

At first, I thought it was some slight misalignment of folds on my part, or slight misinterpretation of diagrams, but I recently found out that the diagrams are for the "easy" version, and that the version on his Flickr stream has some tweaks.

I'm trying to deduce the "tweaks" by comparing my finished model with the Flickr image, but I need some larger paper to play with.

I'm wondering if anyone else has figured out the differences.
The eyebrows should be simple enough, but the mouth and moustache seem to be very different, and there are a few layers to deal with, so it's hard to see exactly what's going on.

Also, in an effort to add something to the thread - a couple of videos of Brian folding the model;

Thanks for posting your question in an existing thread and not opening up a new one :)

I haven't ever folded the model so I can't help you with the differences, but I wish you all the best luck to get the result you want to achieve.

Thanks for posting the videos, they helped me zip through the mask!

I started playing around with it, and you're right, the eyebrows are simple enough. The mouth took me the longest to figure out; I think he sunk the bird base flap under part of the layer underneath. The mustache is mostly an optical illusion, you fold the part right under the nose so that it looks mostly like a curve. The shaping produces the rest of the effect.

There are a few other easy sinks and folds, such as curving the bottom of the cheeks, but for the most part, this simplified version will get you all the needed flaps. You just need to figure out what to do with them! Then you just have to practice to get it even half as good looking as Brian's...

Thanks for bringing up the challenge of folding it! I might have to perfect it for the fifth...

@Anna
You're welcome, and thank you.

@Oz
I've had a couple of tries at figuring it out, but I'm not completely satisfied.
I agree that the easy version gets you the "base" that you need, but I keep tearing and crumpling the parts that I play with, so I don't have anything to show yet.

I have to go out for a couple of hours this morning, but when I get back I'll have to fold the model and compare/contrast it with Brian's version.

I have just about figured out what's supposed to go where, but I can't figure out how!
The eyebrows and eyes are done, I think. Seems like it's just a crimp fold through each layer. And I'm pretty sure the beard is done. But the flaps coming off the nose look very different, and I don't know where they come from, because there doesn't seem to be enough paper. The moustache is still giving me trouble, too; I'll have to take another look and follow your suggestion.

I'll also post some pics of the things that (I think) I've figured out.

I made a 13,5cm tall one from a 22,5cm square. To get a decent sized mask, you should use a square of at least 30cm, I think. The easiest answer, though, would be to mesure your face and multiply that number by 5/3 :lol:.
