I had one of these situations last night, details are not interesting but basically I did not pay attention when I was requested to. I understand people reacting like that, I wouldn't like it, if it were done to me. Regarding your banned friend, poor fellow, but I bet he deserved it.
I am playing devil's advocate here, because I know "they" are the ones that are right. Compulsive behavior should not be tolerated and some people (I included) take this thing to the extreme.

I know that you wrote it only because "they" might read this posts..
My wife has some handcraft hobbies. Whenever I want to sit with my papers, all I need is to make sure that she can do it too.
But to put 4 kids (1.3 to 8 yr.) to sleep, satisfy the teenager needs and finish all the house works takes some time. Sometimes instead of collapsing papers I just collaps into my bed..
My parents are proud of my foldings, but more than once they have threathened me with riping my models in half if i keep folding when they call for me. I cant leave alone a model during an open sink!
That's what I say. I folded during school all throughout high school (I have toned it down some now that I'm in college). In fact, by my junior and senior years I folded in just about every class period. I was able to pay attention still (unless it was a really complex fold), especially since I tend to learn things rather quickly. I got chewed out by some teachers, but I kept on folding, and they eventually accepted that I could still do well and fold and let me go on with it.
A lot of teachers would yell at me once and then just leave me alone the rest of the year-one teacher asked me a question when I was folding, but I answered it right so he let me be. Another just grabbed what I was folding off of my desk without saying anything and gave it back at the end of the period. Another threw away an octopus that I was working on (I just folded another later ). I guess I am kind of stubborn about it and I probably overdid it, but really, what else are you supposed to do in high school
I almost dont fold in school, but once i created a grasshopper, and i was showing it to my classmates, when a teacher taked it and wrinkled it. I got so angry that i went to direction to argue with that teacher. He even told me that he had dropped it to the garbage. At the end, he said that he tought it was a paper with message, and gave it back to me. He was really angry in that moment, but now he congratulates me for my foldings and says me that i should study robotics
Well, i've reached a nice arrangement with the missus, and calm is restored. She's very tolerant and understanding. And I'm quite obsessive. She's created a sweet little owl fold, and wants me to put it up online. She doesn't really do origami, really, but she's beaten me to it, and only terasing me occasionally.
As to my friend who is banned from folding...
I hid a few sheets of paper in a dusty old book in the local library, and texted him with the location. Honestly, it's like a cold war thriller.
