Tree Stump

I was thinking of creating a tree from 2 pieces. The top portion will just be a simple design using a polyhedra. I wanted to make some sort of a tree trunk to set that top piece on top of, but this was where I got stuck. I was wondering if there are any recommendations for a tree stump that would work nicely?

I came across the gothic cuffs found here: http://cedison.wordpress.com/category/origami-diagrams/

which made me think I could make one of those and stand it upright as a tree trunk. Since it's hollow, the non-flat polyhedral shape of the top piece would sit on top of it no problem. Since the polyhedra can be multicolored with different colored modules, it would be nice to be able to do that with the trunk, but it won't be possible with the idea above.

Anyone have any recommendations?

I am working on folding a bacteriophage, and the head and tail structure may be what you're looking for. That structure is basically an icosahedron on a stick, so you could perhaps make use of it. It isn't color changed how I folded it, but it should be possible. Hereis my bacteriophage (it is an initial version). I can post a CP if you are interested in trying it.

wow! that looks awesome! I can straighten out the legs and those would be some pretty neat looking roots with a nice stump!

Unfortunately, I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to CP ... I'm not as advanced of an enthusiast. I can follow intermediate to advanced (maybe) diagram/instructions, but I've never attempted CPs ... you could forward the CP to j3tang [at] gmail [dot] com, but it might be a lost cause for me to attempt it ... hehe

gotta start somewhere, but hopefully it's not that crazy?

Hmmm...it is probably not the easiest one to understand. It is not a conventional CP as it doesn't fold flat, and it also is not the easiest to fold, although the concept is not very difficult. By the way, it is easy to get rid of the legs if you don't want roots.

I guess the issue for me is how to figure out the CP
I'm gonna have to diligently read and experiment with them.

All right-I will be sure to try to make a CP for you then! It is from a hexagon, so I will need to figure out how to make an angled/radial grid...
