If you read the other posts, you'd realize the post is two years old and GameDesigner has only posted once, which is a pretty good indicator he's not coming back to these forums. It's too bad he never got back to us on his ideas.

Folding paper on a screen sounds cool, but giving it a story and tasks sounds a little too boring to me. Is there software that allows you to manipulate paper on a screen? Any complex models sound a little out of the question because of the programming difficulties.

I just got a thought. Video diagrams can be really helpful, but hands tend to always get in the way. With the right software, could you make a diagram that goes through the steps in 3D? Like say a sink fold or rabbit ear?
Whenever I do complex Origami I get this sinking feeling.

In the game, you're not actually going to fold anything. It's all just related to origami. If they did that, nobody would buy the game.

That would certainly be possible with CGI animation, but it's very impractical if you want to make folding sequences for entire models. It could be helpful to teach beginners advanced folding techniques, but diagrams are always the best for people who already know origami.

I've wanted to design an origami game for some time now. An RPG, starring a hero/heroine who can fold a sort of living paper into creatures (among using other magic common in that fantasy world). It seems to be a common theme.

That would be far off, but I do have some connections with MMO designers. I have planned for a 2-d MMORPG with at least an origami tradeskill in it, at most a summoner type class. I can't afford a server at this time, but I'll pass it along when/if I get it going.

Interesting. A lot of people immediately think about RPG's with an origami theme. Why not a small action game instead?

You know those bowling or golf games where the accuracy of your throw/shot is determined by a well-timed press of a button? Imagine an animation of a classic crane being folded. In each step of the sequence, you need to press a button at the right time, when the paper is aligned correctly.

You might thus end up with a perfectly folded crane. or an ugly model with misaligned corners.

(Introduce time-bonuses, on-line hi-score lists and different origami models to spice things up...)

By the way, do there exist games where you have to match crease patterns with finalized models?
