Robert Lang's Roosevelt Elk - initial Steps

Post by lyon0100 »

I am confounded by Robert Lang's crease pattern for his beautiful "Roosevelt Elk" Which can be seen at this link:

I have read his book and I find it very helpful, but I am dumbfounded by some of the initial creases.

From the black dot on the bottom to the black dot on top, there is a continuos mountain fold. I don't know how that's possible when you're trying to collapse everything. And at the two red dots, there are only two valley folds instead of the three that you would need to collapse that triangle.

Can anyone give me a hint on how to think about this part of the puzzle?
Even just seeing the base folded once would help me emensly. I think that if I can figure this one out, it'll make a lot of other crease patterns accesible to me - as I continue to learn.
Thanks so much
