"Natural" Shape of Satoshi Kamiya's Ryu Jin
I'm really in to Pokemon, and I want to make Rayquaza. I was thinking about using what little knowledge I have about how RJ is collapsed to make the needed parts. My main question is this: Does RJ naturally have a bend halfway through or did SK just model it that way? For clarity's sake, I mean between the front and hind legs, is there just a natural bend there.

Its just shaped that way. Using Ryu Jin/Ryu Zin is a round about way of designing your subject, unless you plan to utilize the pattern grafting and second set of legs. For me, I'd experiment with regular old box pleating, with a frog-base as the head, and patterning in cubes for the turbine type parts (collapsing the cubes would give a similar look). If you wanted to get really fancy, you could pattern-in the circular markings as well. Just my 2 cents, good luck

I was definitely considering the frog base for the head, but now that I'm thinking about it, I kinda wanted to have an open mouth, but I might have an idea or two ta get that. Also, if I manage to somehow get the yellow parts on Rayquaza, I'll seriously pass out!! That'd be hard!! 'Course, I guess what I could do is fold a design that pleases me, mark where the shapes would be, and figure a way to pleat them in. Or, the somewhat cop-out way would be ta just make firm creases in those places!!

Definitely don't use ryuzin as a starting point-the base for it is very specialized, won't suit a rayquaza well, and worst of all, will be much harder to fold than it needs to be. The yellow circles would be very difficult to add in and would take up a lot of paper, likely forcing a complete redesign of the model, so I would suggest deciding beforehand whether or not to bother with them. Good luck-you picked a great subject!

Haha I was just joking with adding the yellow marks. I'm no where NEAR that good ta successfully add them. I have already made up a head (modified frog base), now to make sure there's a way to graft it to a square. after that, the body!! maybe just start with getting the long part, maybe also the arms at first, then i'll work on the fins.

Haha, I find it funny that I am designing a Rayquaza too...
But I'm too stupid to make anything so I gave up at the head.
The head was a bunch of pleats and the mouth was an elias-stretch...
and the horns were made from the pleats.

Aw don't think of yourself as stupid!! We're honestly both just very inexperienced designers, that's all!!Washi wrote:Haha, I find it funny that I am designing a Rayquaza too...

my head so far is just a modified, blintzed frog base. pics in a little bit!! (as you can imply, i have a head, now to attempt to graft it onto a square, then go from there)

Nice...
Can you post a picture of the head too, if you can be bothered to do it?

i think i accidentally threw it out
what you do, make a blintz base, but fold one corner up and the other three down. then, frog base. "sink" the small tips into the model. work with the paper at the one corner where you blintzed on top until the corner is loose, making sure the small tip stays in place. closed sink 1/3 of each side, accomodating for the loose flap so it remains loose. on the same side as the loose flap, closed sink the two bottom sides 1/3 of the way.
i hope that's clear enough!!
