Η ανάπτυξη μιας αυτόνομης έρευνας για το φαινόμενο καθ' εαυτό έχει μεγάλη σημασία, εφόσον οι ελληνορθόδοξοι πληθυσμοί υπήρξαν από τους πρώτους που συναντήθηκαν με το Ισλάμ κατά την έξοδό του από την Αραβική Χερσόνησο. Επιπλέον, η σύγχρονη Ελλάδα συνεχίζει να βρίσκεται στο σύνορο των δύο κόσμων, έστω και αν τα όρια δεν είναι συμπαγή και αδιάβατα. Η παρούσα μελέτη εστιάζει στην πρώτη αραβική περίοδο του Ισλάμ. Παράλληλα διερευνώνται οι συνθήκες εντός των οποίων αναπτύχθηκε το εξτρεμιστικό Ισλάμ και επανεμφανίστηκε η έννοια του Ιερού Πολέμου (τζιχάντ). Ορίζεται επίσης το σύστημα αναφοράς, το «εμείς», μέσω του οποίου προσεγγίζεται το ισλαμικό φαινόμενο. Παρουσιάζονται οι παράγοντες που συνέβαλαν στη διαμόρφωση του νέου ελληνισμού, καθώς και η μορφή και οι τρόποι σύνθεσης της ταυτότητάς του. Στη συνέχεια παρουσιάζεται η ιστορία του Ισλάμ από την εμφάνισή του στις ερήμους της Αραβίας. Παρακολουθείται η ανάπτυξη της νέας θρησκείας, η σχέση της και οι διαφορές της με τις άλλες μονοθεϊστικές θρησκείες. Παρατίθενται οι βασικές της απόψεις, οι μηχανισμοί διάδοσης, η επεκτατική πολιτική των πρώτων χαλιφών, καθώς και η πολύμορφη συνάντηση του ελληνισμού με τον ισλαμικό κόσμο. Ιδιαίτερη μνεία γίνεται στο Εμιράτο της Κρήτης, ένα ιδιαίτερο αραβικό κράτος του 9ου-10ου αιώνα μ.Χ.
