20. American Canto - Olivia Nuzzi
A mesmerizing firsthand account of the warping of American reality over the past decade as Donald Trump has risen to dominance—from a participatory witness who got so far inside the distortion field that it swallowed her whole. Olivia Nuzzi spent a third of her life observing those in power. She became a reporter in 2014, when the political landscape began to reconfigure itself around a singular personality whom she was uniquely primed to understand. Over the next ten years, she used her access and eye for detail to chronicle his campaigns, trials, and government in blockbuster feature stories that drove the national conversation and propelled her to the heights of her profession. Then, in 2024, her personal life collided with the public interest in a scandal that cost Nuzzi her job and reputation. Amid a full-blown tabloid frenzy, Nuzzi went quiet, drove west, and spent the next year in self-imposed exile at the edge of the country, where she wrote this searing and astonishingly clear-eyed account of what she—and we—have experienced over the last decade. Nuzzi walked through hell and she took notes. The result is a brilliant and bracing reckoning with recent history from one of our sharpest political observers. Beginning in the present in California, and then turning her gaze back east and back in time, she crafts a dazzling mosaic of the Trump era: her many behind-the-scenes encounters with Trump himself, from their first meeting in Trump Tower to a wealth of revelatory conversations about his Hollywood aspirations, his dreams, his fears about being assassinated, and more; the life she led uneasily that skidded to a halt; the rise of digital surveillance and the decline of privacy; the normalization of political violence; and the collision of polarization with the democratization of information to sow doubt about every aspect of our reality. American Canto is also a powerful personal history. Nuzzi’s account of growing up in working-class New Jersey as the child of alcoholics in the shadow of New York City and 9/11 is raw and moving. Her mother was angry, beautiful, and unpredictable. Her father, a loving man who supported his family as a sanitation worker, removed debris from Ground Zero. They both died young. A version of Nuzzi did, too. She approached this “kind of death” with the critical distance of a reporter. When interrogating her own mistakes, Nuzzi confesses, “I had trained my whole life in the battlefield of crisis.” Despite her profession, Olivia Nuzzi has never been interested in breaking news. American Canto is not a memoir, nor a tell-all, nor a book about the president. Instead, it is something more artful and more interesting—a character study of a nation undergoing radical transformation in real time. It seeks to reframe our understanding of the history we are living through from the perspective of someone who observed it from within the kaleidoscope and now sees it clearly from the other side. |
21. Processen - Franz Kafka
3:a på Le Mondes lista över 1900-talets bästa böcker. |

Before I could guess his intentions, he dipped his shoulder into my middle and picked me up in a fireman's hold. The breath whooshed from me, and the next thing I knew he was walking out of the room. "What the hell!" I struggled against the arm clamped across the back of my thighs and pounded on his back. "Put me down! You have no right to—ouch!" I cried out when he slapped me hard across the bottom. "That's assault!" No one, and I mean no one, had ever slapped me on the bottom. When he did it again I was shocked and surprised at how it made me tingle. "Now stop your f**king wiggling or you won't be able to sit down by the time we reach my room!" Eagle was beyond angry. Nothing I did to fight against him fazed him as he stormed down the hallway. I didn't appreciate being treated like a child. It was humiliating, especially when I heard his brothers' laughter. As far as I was concerned, I had every right to be there with my brother while they decided how he was going to pay for his accident. With a huff I clamped my lips and reluctantly accepted my fate, simmering inside. As soon as we were in his room he tossed me onto his bed.  "You-you jerk!" I glared up at him as I bounced, so pissed off that I was out of breath.  Eagle just stared down at me for a minute, his jaw tight and his eyes on fire. His eyes zeroed in on my heaving breasts for a hot second before he grunted something under his breath and turned to leave. His treatment of me, coupled with my fear of whatever they were going to do to Ron, caused me to jump off the bed and run after him. I caught up with him just before he opened the door. "You're not locking me in here!" I hissed.  When he spun around, I slapped my hands on his chest and gave him a shove, throwing my body into it. Surprisingly, he fell back against the door with a grunt, but his expression clearly revealed that I'd made a big mistake. He wrapped his big hands around my wrists and jerked me up against him. "Put your hands on me like that again and you won't like the consequences," he threatened, grating the words down into my face.  I was suddenly afraid, but excited at the same time. His grip was slightly painful, and his mouth was tight. If eyes could light a fire, I'd have been burning up. I wet my bottom lip. His eyes caught the movement, and the flicker of awareness took my breath away. I didn't know what he was feeling, but I knew what being up flush against his hard body and his hands on me were making me feel. I knew that I shouldn't be feeling this way. I should be worried about my brother. But something about this man got me hot.  |

31. Earth to Moon - Moon Unit Zappa
The saying goes that "God only gives you what you can handle." Well God didn't grow up in my atheist, Wiccan, fame-laden, oversexed, teetotalling, drug-free, cloistered, chaotic, non-communicative, workaholic, feral-feeling house.' For Moon Unit, daughter of musician Frank Zappa and his 'manager', Gail, processing a life so unique, so punctuated by the whims of creative urges, the tastes of popular culture and the calculus of celebrity, has at times been eviscerating. But it is her deep sense of humour and unshakeable humility that keeps her - and this memoir - pinned to the ground. A child-star at age 14 after her accidental international hit single (recorded with her father), 'Valley Girl', turned her into a reluctant celebrity, Moon Unit Zappa's life has been utterly extraordinary from her birth in 1967 into a family that was already blessed/cursed as music royalty thanks to the acknowledged genius of Frank. But what are the consequences of growing up in a family who spend most of their time naked arguing about sexual/extra-marital liaisons and practising white magic in a free-for-all state of nonconformist, virtuoso abandon? Earth to Moon is a reckoning with self-esteem, the ghosts of the past and a mother and a father who, in the process of leaving their mark upon on the world, scarred their first daughter on home soil. Brutally self-deprecating and funny as hell, it belies a rose-tinted perspective on the 70s and 80s west coast American scene, from within the belly of the beast of the rock and roll world. |

39. Everybody - Olivia Laing
'Intensely moving, vital and artful' - Guardian 'A dizzying ride . . . both timely and beguiling' - Sunday Times From the award-winning author of Crudo , this is an exhilarating and eminently readable study of the long struggle for bodily freedom – from gay rights and sexual liberation to feminism and the civil rights movement. Drawing on their own experiences in protest and travelling from Weimar Berlin to the prisons of McCarthy-era America, Laing grapples with some of the most significant and complicated figures of the past century, among them Nina Simone, Sigmund Freud, Susan Sontag and Malcolm X. At a time when basic rights are once again in danger, Everybody is a crucial examination of the forces arranged against freedom – and a celebration of how ordinary human bodies can resist oppression and reshape the world. Longlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize. 'An ambitious, absorbing achievement that will make your brain hum' – Evening Standard 'Sets her alongside the likes of Arundhati Roy, John Berger and James Baldwin' – Financial Times |

A LIBRARY READS PICK! When a determined killer targets her brother, a grim reaper risks everything to save him in this delightful cozy mystery. Nora Bird works for S.C.Y.T.H.E., which might seem odd for someone as terrified of death as she is. But ever since her parents died in an accident when she was six, she's been obsessed with avoiding risk, and what better place to learn how to cheat death than the company that employs the nation's grim reapers? The work enables Nora to learn all about the myriad ways you can kick the bucket, which is comforting...until one day, a file crosses her desk with a name she recognizes. Her twin brother’s. The twins haven’t spoken in six months, but Charlie is all Nora has left. Completely against her cautious nature, Nora steals the file and flees, racing to her brother’s house. She begs him to trust her that his death is imminent, and they hit the road (with his parrot, Jessica, who has plenty to say) in an attempt to evade both death and S.C.Y.T.H.E., whose sole mission of collecting souls has been disrupted by Charlie’s continued existence. Alas, every time Nora saves him, a new cause of death appears in his file. Someone is determined to take Charlie out, and Nora will have to use everything she's ever learned about death to discover the culprit. |
47. Oczy szeroko otwarte. Polska strategia na czas wojny światowej - Jacek Bartosiak
Między mocarstwami trwa wojna systemowa o kształt przyszłego świata. Polska pilnie potrzebuje więc odpowiedniej strategii, by sobie w nowej epoce poradzić. |

I know my role, and I play it well. In fact, I thoroughly enjoy spending the majority of my game time in the penalty box before leaving the arena with a new girl on my arm each night. What I don't like is the new flight attendant on our team's private plane. She works for me, not the other way around. But I'll be sure to remind her of that, and I can guarantee, by the end of the season, she'll be begging to quit her job. But every road trip blurs the lines, and I can't quite figure out if I keep pushing that flight attendant call button in order to push her buttons, or if it's more than that. STEVIE I've been a flight attendant for years. I thought I'd seen it all, but when my new job lands me onboard working for the most egotistical and self-righteous diva in the NHL, I start to second guess everything. Including the promise I made to myself of never hooking up with an athlete again . . . no matter how annoyingly tempting he may be. Evan Zanders is unfiltered, unapologetic, and too attractive for his own good. He loves his image, but I hate everything about it. Everything but him. 82. Stilwell and the American Experience in China - Barbara W. Tuchman
Barbara W. Tuchman won her second Pulitzer Prize for this nonfiction masterpiece—an authoritative work of history that recounts the birth of modern China through the eyes of one extraordinary American.   General Joseph W. Stilwell was a man who loved China deeply and knew its people as few Americans ever have. Barbara W. Tuchman’s groundbreaking narrative follows Stilwell from the time he arrived in China during the Revolution of 1911, through his tours of duty in Peking and Tientsin in the 1920s and ’30s, to his return as theater commander in World War II, when the Nationalist government faced attack from both Japanese invaders and Communist insurgents. Peopled by warlords, ambassadors, and missionaries, this classic biography of the cantankerous but level-headed “Vinegar Joe” sparkles with Tuchman’s genius for animating the people who shaped history.   Praise for Stilwell and the American Experience in China   “Tuchman’s best book . . . so large in scope, so crammed with information, so clear in exposition, so assured in tone that one is tempted to say it is not a book but an education.” — The New Yorker   “The most interesting and informative book on U.S.–China relations . . . a brilliant, lucid and authentic account.” — The Nation   “A fantastic and complex story finely told.” — The New York Times Book Review |

Determined to bring light to this haunted place-to fill it with people, with life and hope, once again - Sonya decides it is time to break the curse and banish a malevolent spirit once and for all. But the enemy in the black dress continues to hover, to come at her in frightening forms. They may be illusions-but illusions can be powerful enough to wound, even kill. This dark-hearted witch wants to be mistress of Poole Manor, at any cost. 86.

94. Love, Theoretically - Ali Hazelwood
"The reigning queen of STEM romance."— The Washington Post An Indie Next and Library Reads Pick! Rival physicists collide in a vortex of academic feuds and fake dating shenanigans in this delightfully STEMinist romcom from the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis and Love on the Brain .   The many lives of theoretical physicist Elsie Hannaway have finally caught up with her. By day, she’s an adjunct professor, toiling away at grading labs and teaching thermodynamics in the hopes of landing tenure. By other day, Elsie makes up for her non-existent paycheck by offering her services as a fake girlfriend, tapping into her expertly honed people-pleasing skills to embody whichever version of herself the client needs.   Honestly, it’s a pretty sweet gig—until her carefully constructed Elsie-verse comes crashing down. Because Jack Smith, the annoyingly attractive and arrogant older brother of her favorite client, turns out to be the cold-hearted experimental physicist who ruined her mentor’s career and undermined the reputation of theorists everywhere. And he’s the same Jack Smith who rules over the physics department at MIT, standing right between Elsie and her dream job.   Elsie is prepared for an all-out war of scholarly sabotage but…those long, penetrating looks? Not having to be anything other than her true self when she’s with him? Will falling into an experimentalist’s orbit finally tempt her to put her most guarded theories on love into practice? |

A demolished man. A heartbroken woman. And the intense love that will rebuild them both. The highly anticipated and epic conclusion to the Chasing Red duology. "Red," Caleb whispered. "Do you know how I felt when you left me?" I looked into his eyes. The emotion I saw in them, the intensity, and the tenderness filled up my throat. "I felt ruined. Because, Red, every time you break me apart, you put me back together. And I always come out better than before." "So," he cupped my face, stroking my cheek with his thumb. "Ruin me." Praise for Wattpad sensation Isabelle Ronin's Chasing Red : " Chasing Red is a perfectly sweet romance, with just the right amount of spice."— Foreword Reviews "Readers will be chomping at the bit while waiting for the next installment!"— RT Book Reviews "Readers will swoon over Caleb."— Publishers Weekly |
– Amazon-recension |
